    City of Palo Alto Utilities has multiple exciting career opportunities within the Water Gas Wastewater Operations division! We welcome applications for roles asUtility Installer/Repairer, Utility Installer/Repairer Assistant,or Equipment Operator, depending on qualifications.

    The Utility Installer/Repairer or Utility Installer/Repairer Assistant is responsible for the installation, repair and maintenance of the water and gas distribution systems and wastewater collection system.

    The Equipment Operator will work with the team responsible for maintaining the City’s utility infrastructure. The Equipment Operator will be expected to operate an electric sewer rodding machine, along with a CCTV push camera. This equipment, and other various tools and machinery, will be used to maintain and inspect City-owned sewer laterals and mains. This position will work both independently and as a member of a work crew and will receive direction from a supervisor or lead.

    Utility Installer/Repairer Ideal Candidate
    • Ability to communicate with public and co workers
    • Ability to understand and apply technical terms and practices
    • Skilled in mathematics and measurements
    • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures
    • Skilled in the use of power and hand tools
    • Skilled in the use of service trucks, dump trucks, air compressors and other job related equipment
    • Knowledge of valves, fittings, and clamps used in water, gas and wastewater repairs
    • Skilled in locating gas, water and sewer components using pipe locating equipment, maps and physical signs
    • Class B California Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker endorsement
    • D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate
    • At least one year underground utility experience with each utility (water, gas, wastewater) totaling four years
    Utility Installer/Repairer Assistant Ideal Candidate
    • Ability to communicate with public and co-workers
    • Ability to understand technical terms.
    • Skilled in mathematics and measurements.
    • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
    • Skilled in the use of power and hand tools.

    • Ability to communicate with others and to assimilate and understand information, in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
    • Ability to operate assigned equipment.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Thursday 6:30 am - 4:00 pm, alternating Fridays 6:30 am - 3:00 pm

    Essential Duties:

    Utility Installer/Repairer and Utility Installer/Repairer Assistant

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Responds to USA mark and locate request, marking water, gas and wastewater mains and services in accordance with USA requirements.
    • Repairs and replaces water main leaks and damaged pipes and broken water valves, curb stops, and meter couplings.
    • Repairs service tap blow outs and damaged fire hydrant laterals.
    • Taps into existing water mains for the installation of new water mains, fire hydrants, fire services, valves, and domestic water services.
    • Installs water meters, noting readings and serial numbers on set cards.
    • Locates gas main and services leaks using maps, pipe locating equipment and gas leak detection equipment.
    • Installs P.E. gas mains and services utilizing approved methods of fusion and mechanical joining.
    • Replaces leaking gas services with plastic pipe.
    • Taps into existing steel or plastic gas mains for the installation of new plastic gas mains and services.
    • Installs gas meters and regulators noting readings and serial numbers on set cards.
    • Taps into existing sewer mains for the installation of new laterals and manholes.
    • Repairs existing laterals and manholes and replaces sewer lateral traps with cleanouts.
    • Cleans sewer mains.
    • Chemically treats mains for root control and sets out poison for rodent control.
    • Records and diagrams completed work on work orders and job prints for submittal to supervisor.
    • Sets up barricades, flashers and cones to protect work sites.

    Equipment Operator
    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Performs preventative maintenance on city owned sewer laterals and mains
    • Use of an electronic device to enter and retrieve information related to work assignments and record-keeping
    • Repairs existing laterals and manholes.
    • Replaces sewer lateral traps with cleanouts.
    • Locates cleanouts for maintenance.
    • Cleans sewer mains.
    • Chemically treats mains for root control and sets out poison for rodent control.
    • Records and diagrams completed work on work orders and job prints for submittal to supervisor.
    • Sets up barricades, flashers and cones to protect work sites.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Utility Installer/Repairer

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
    • High school graduate or equivalent training and experience.
    • Attainment of journeyperson-level proficiency in gas, water, and wastewater underground utility construction which is normally attained after a three-year training period as a Utilities Installer-Repairer Assistant or completion of an accredited pipefitter apprenticeship program with four years of experience in gas, water, and sewer underground construction.
    SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS
    • Possession and maintenance of a D1 Water Distribution Operator Certificate as required by the California State Department of Health Services
    • Possession of a valid California Commercial Driver's License Class B with tanker endorsement
    Utility Installer/Repairer Assistant
    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
    • High school graduate or equivalent training and experience.

    and
    • One year of experience in construction, preferably in a position working with gas, water, or sewer systems, or experience in maintenance and operation of gas, water, or sewer systems. Underground construction experience preferred.

    SPECIAL REQUIRMENTS:
    • Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's permit with appropriate endorsements required within sixty days of appointment with the ability to obtain license within six months of appointment.
    Equipment Operator
    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:
    • Completion of high school, GED or equivalent.
    • One year experience operating type(s) of equipment used in area of assignment.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Possession of a valid California Class B driver's license for new employees and the ability to obtain within six months of appointment for current employees.
