Posting Expires: 11/13/24 Salary: $97,106.55 General Description and Classification Standards Manages professional/technical engineering projects including, engineering design and review, standards, survey work, inspections, and other engineering project components. Oversees major capital improvement project design, designs linear infrastructure of various lengths, prepares construction plans for contractors to follow, provides solutions for infrastructure projects to keep the City of Atlanta's infrastructure functional for its current and future corporate and private citizens. Supports a full range of Planning & Development operations by delivering this data in formats and in applications that supports critical planning, engineering, and decision support activities across the enterprise. This is a highly experienced professional who routinely exercises project leadership over complex projects, trains other professionals, or serves as a specialized subject matter expert in one or more specific areas. This is NOT a routine promotional level and the specific justification for classification at this level must be documented.
Supervision Received Works under very general supervision. Depending on organization structure, may work independently with responsibility for an assigned function or program.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities These are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. May perform other duties as assigned. Researches and prepares guidelines for alternative material and construction installation methods for use in the road projects.
- Plans and designs solutions to individual challenges and problems in the transportation system.
- Reviews various roadway constriction plans, approves, and make recommendations.
- Receives, documents, processes, and performs engineering analysis on roadway design projects.
- Prepares exhibits and cost estimates for potential construction design projects informs city staff and applicants.
- Responds to Request for Information (RFI's) from citizens, council members, city employees, etc.
- Manages staff and design consultants and directs their daily activity as required.
- Provides technical input, documents research, manages design budget, process invoices, and attends project meetings as part of providing professional insight and support.
- Ensures that plans adhere to federal, state, and local roadway design standards, policies, guides, and including National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) guidelines.
- Conducts research to ensure that best practices including safe, and cost-effective methods are used designing and reviewing transportation infrastructures.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities This is a partial listing of necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job successfully. It is not an exhaustive list.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local roadway design standards, policies, guides, and research. Experience with AASHTO, GDOT, and City of Atlanta guidance and ADA/PROWAG design requirements.
- Have experience with AASHTO, GDOT, and City of Atlanta guides and ADA/PROWAG design requirements.
- Extensive knowledge of civil engineering and roadway engineering design, transportation construction, computer aided design (CAD) systems, and traffic engineering.
- Working knowledge of drafting, working knowledge of public works construction.
- Skills in public speaking and interpersonal relations with data between platforms with no loss of spatial accuracy or feature attribution.
- Skill in providing excellent leadership to lower-level engineers and project staff.
- Ability to operate personal computer, digitizer, plotters, and related GIS equipment.
- Ability to design and develop relational databases.
- Ability to instruct others in the operation and use of engineering software.
- Ability to direct the work of others.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other divisions and the public.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to read, interpret and produce maps, surveys, engineering drawings and graphics from engineering software.
Minimum Qualifications | Education and Experience Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. 5 years of experience in surveying, engineering design, inspection and drafting, including management experience.
Preferred Education & Experience Master’s degree in civil engineering and 5 years of experience in surveying, engineering design, inspection and drafting including management experience.
