General Purpose: Under close supervision, provides basic and routine shelving, clerical and filing work in the operation of a public library; promotes the library and its services to meet the needs of the community.
Primary Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe following duties

- Assists patrons locating library materials; checks materials in and out; answers the phone; issues library cards; logs patrons on and off of the computers; provides information concerning library services, policies and procedures.
- Sorts library materials by alphabetizing or by using the Dewey Decimal System.
- Shelves all materials returned to the library.
- Keeps all shelves in neat and correct order.
- Scans all shelves and collections for proper order on a daily basis.
- Cleans tables of books and other library materials; returns items to appropriate shelves and sorting areas.
- Assists in generating routine emails or makes routine phone calls to patrons on overdue materials and holds.
- Prepares new materials for circulation; repairs materials to return to circulation.
- Serves customers at the circulation desk performing such activities as check-in and check-out of library materials and customer registration.
- Searches for books by titles, authors and subject; places items on hold.
- Performs other duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications & Position RequirementsEducation and Experience:Six (6) months of customer service experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of: - City policies and procedures.
- Principles and practices of library cataloging and classification.
Skill in: - Providing effective customer service with tact and courtesy.
- Operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of business software.
- Following and effectively communicating verbal and written instructions.
Additional InformationDays and hours worked will vary depending on department needs; evening hours and weekend work may be required.
12-Month Goals:- Learn city, division and department policies and procedures.
- Attend at least one (1) training or workshop per quarter to enhance library service skills and stay updated on customer service.
- Become familiar with at least three (3) online resources that the library currently offers.
