    The Position

    Adult Rights Specialists provide assistance and advocacy to protect and enhance the health, safety, welfare and rights of older persons (adults 60 and older) and/or vulnerable persons (adults with intellectual, physical or related disabilities), henceforth referred to as clients.

    Under general supervision, incumbents perform the full range of duties described in the series concept and provide assistance to clients residing in the community or who reside in facilities such as skilled nursing, group homes, homes for individual residential care, and assisted living facilities to improve their quality of life, health, safety and welfare. Work at this level is characterized by the complexity of the cases assigned, problem-solving, resource identification and referral, technical assistance for paid providers, and may include follow-up to ensure individuals receive appropriate services. This is the journey level of the series. The Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) is currently recruiting for a full-time Adult Rights Specialist 1 to serve as a Community Advocate in Las Vegas, Nevada. This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies as they occur in the following programs: Office of Consumer Health Assistance (OCHA), Adult Protective Services (APS), and Long Term Care Ombudsman (LTCO).

    The primary responsibilities of the Community Advocate will be to provide guidance and advocacy to Nevada's older adults and individuals with disabilities. This position will provide case management and coordination of resource assistance to individuals that do not reside in facilities for long-term care. The Community Advocate will conduct home visits to homebound individuals to assist with applications and food deliveries. The incumbent will build and maintain relationships with community partners and ensure public awareness of the existence and purpose of the services provided by ADSD through outreach and presentations. This position will manage and disperse emergency funds that are available to individuals over the age of 60.     To Qualify:

    In order to be qualified, you must meet the following requirements:
    Education and Experience (Minimum Qualifications) Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in social work, psychology, sociology or related social science or human services field, and one year of paraprofessional experience that included the application of rules and regulations, interviewing and eliciting information, identifying service needs, researching and resolving complaints, writing business correspondence, and public speaking; OR graduation from high school or equivalent education and three years of paraprofessional experience that included the application of rules and regulations, interviewing and eliciting information, identifying service needs, researching and resolving complaints, writing business correspondence, and public speaking; OR one year as a Family Services Specialist II in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required at the time of appointment and as a condition of continuing employment. A pre-employment criminal history check and fingerprinting are required. Persons offered employment in this position will be required to pay for these items. The Examination Application Evaluation Exam The exam will consist of an application evaluation. In contrast, the State's lowest point (along the Colorado River) is only 470 feet above sea level. From majestic mountains to desert valleys, nature has endowed Nevada with diverse and unique ecosystems.
