    The Palo Alto City Library is recruiting for three Senior Librarian positions in youth services. We’re looking for experienced and flexible library professionals who are adept in serving the needs of youth of various ages, backgrounds, and needs. Our Senior Librarians play a key role in helping to expand our presence in the community through high-quality programs, services, and outreach. The Palo Alto City Library has been recognized by the Library Journal’s Index of Public Library Service as a 5-star library. The specific positions will have areas of responsibility as follows:

    Youth Services Senior Librarian (Public Services and Collections Development)

    The position has a combined focus on public services for children (programming, outreach, direct services) and collection development (selection/purchase of children’s materials). The position will collaborate with both our technical and acquisitions departments as well as public services and programming operations. The ideal candidate is experienced in both areas. This position will be based at the Mitchell Park Library and will have a Tuesday-Saturday schedule, including an evening shift to be determined .

    Youth Services Senior Librarian (Public Services)

    This position focuses on providing youth services for a variety of groups. The ideal candidate is skilled and experienced in providing programming, services, and outreach to youth of various ages, from early learners to teens. This position will be based at the Mitchell Park Library and may also support youth services at our other branch locations as needed. This position will have a Sunday-Thursday schedule, including an evening shift to be determined.

    Teen Services Senior Librarian (Public Services)

    This position focused on teen services, including organizing teen volunteer and activity groups, developing programs and services for teens, and collaborating with schools and community organizations serving the needs of teens. Ideal candidates have strong outreach and community collaboration experience, as well as a passion for helping the learning and developmental needs of teens. This position will be based at the Mitchell Park Library and may also support teen services at our other branch locations as needed. This position will have a Sunday-Thursday schedule, including an evening shift to be determined.

    Essential Duties:

    The Senior Librarian is the advanced professional classification within the Library Department. Incumbents have professional experience to perform high level public library responsibilities. It is a broad classification which covers a variety of work situations including advanced knowledge of reference services, facility operation, collection management, library policies and computerized information systems. Significant portion of the day may include direct public contact.

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • May perform duties of Librarian as required.
    • Responsible for security of building and safety of customers and staff.
    • Responsible for all elements of library programming including planning, coordination, promotion and conducting of programs. Cooperates with other City departments, community and library groups in co-sponsorship of programs.
    • Conducts reference interviews; analyzes, interprets and answers inquiries at all level of complexity utilizing resources in Palo Alto Libraries as well as other libraries and in the community, when required to meet public information needs; keeps informed of new and outdated resources; provides direct assistance to customers of all ages in location and selection of appropriate library materials and may specialize in service to children; assists customers in use of facility, materials and access tools.
    • Develops news and informational items for the library web page and intra-net; creates graphics and verifying information; uses various products to augment the web page and keep customers informed of programs and services.
    • May assist customers wit the use of library technology.

    Related Functions:
    • Coordinates system-wide library committees and may serve on City or library system committees.
    • Handles sensitive personal contact with library customers relative to information needs or library services; refers to supervisor when necessary.
    • Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills and abilities, which would typically be acquired through:

    • Master's Degree in Library and Information Science
    • Three years professional experience as a librarian. Master's degree in Library or Information Science may be substituted for one year of professional experience.
