    Introduction

    The Community and Outreach Specialist works out of the Office of The Police Chief and is part of the Community Engagement Unit. The Specialist coordinates, develops and implements informational programs designed for community and citizen awareness of public safety and is responsible for planning, writing and editing communications for internal and external audiences, such as creating social media content, using a full-range of tools, including print and electronic vehicles. Supports public relations and communications functions and participates in a variety of special projects and initiatives. Works collaboratively with a team to enhance police/community engagement and partnerships.

    Anticipated starting salary may be up to mid-point depending on candidate's experience and internal equity.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience:
    • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited educational institution in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations or a related field.
    • Two years of experience in public affairs, public relations or a related field.
    • Any equivalent combination of education and/or job-related experience that meets the minimum qualifications may be substituted.

    Licensing, Credentials and Other Requirements:
    • Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted driver's license with no major citations within the past 39 months prior to the start date. The Arizona Department of Motor Vehicles requires that out-of-state driver's licenses must be surrendered within 10 days of relocating to the State of Arizona.
    • Every person employed by the City of Scottsdale shall reside in the State of Arizona during his or her active employment by the City, regardless of whether the employee is approved to remote work.
    Other pertinent licenses and/or certifications may be required of some positions depending on division/department/service assignment.

    Essential Functions

    Performs duties and responsibilities commensurate with assigned functional area which may include, but are not limited to, any combination of the following:
    • Communicates with personnel within the assigned functional area, department(s), City employees, the general public, the community, civic organizations and business owners in order to coordinate public education programs, disseminate information, and provide assistance.
    • Provides support to the Police Chief and Command Staff in coordinating public meetings, department promotions and award ceremonies and special events, and implementing public information strategies to project a positive image of the Police Department.
    • Develops, coordinates and implements citizen and teen academies annually.
    • Understands client projects, goals and priorities.
    • Identifies the right audiences and reaches them with the right message and the right platforms
    • Interacts with citizens engaged with the department via social media and traditional communications.

    • Most work is performed in a City office environment with occasional public events at various types of facilities and may have the ability to periodically work remotely.
    • Will have to work outside at times with various police units to create social medial content.
    • Exposure to dust, noise, inclement weather, temperature extremes, and unpleasant odors.
    • Lift and carry materials weighing up to 30 pounds.
    • Operate a variety of standard office equipment including a computer, land line and cell phone, calculator, copy and fax machines requiring continuous and repetitive arm, and hand and eye movement.
    • Move and operate presentation equipment, video and photo cameras.
    • Travel to/from meetings and various locations.
    • Work evenings and weekends as needed.
