    Job Summary

    Under the supervision of the Director of Equity Programs, EOP Sr. Associate Director, and EOP Associate Director, the incumbent provides a range of comprehensive academic advising and counseling services to students. Coordinates several access and retention services to ensure success. Provides timely interventions to students who are in academic warning, murky-middle and major exploration. The counselor provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life.

    Furthermore, the incumbent provides services that are equitable, inclusive and provide culturally sensitive services that enhance the quality of campus life. This position uses a student centered and equity minded approach in all communication and service efforts.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Provide general financial aid advising to students - Provide one-on-one financial aid appointments to program participants. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and institutional financial aid regulations. Provide financial aid workshops each semester to include FAFSA/CADAA Renewal, Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) policies, School Loan information workshops, etc.
    • Provide generalist academic, personal, and career counseling to students - Meet with students on academic warning and academic disqualification.
    • Coordinate the yearly EOP Graduate and Professional Schools Fair event and the EOP Recognition Day Ceremony - Organize and coordinate the Graduate and Professional Schools Fair program, which involves inviting representatives from graduate and professional schools from on-campus and various universities all over the US to participate in a one-day event to provide information regarding their respective institutions to EOP students and the campus community.

    Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    Knowledge of EAB platform. Knowledge of the University admission procedures and requirements of EOP. Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics programs. Working knowledge of standard safe work practices. Thorough knowledge of office systems and ability to use a broad range of technology, systems, and software applications. Excellent oral communication skills and effective interpersonal skills required. Incumbent must have experience processing, answering and following-up as needed with office mail, phone calls, email and in-person visitors. Must be able to respond to complex inquiries from the public, residents, parents, prospective residents, CSULB employees and students. Due to telephone and in-person interactions, must possess the ability to understand, interpret and respond (orally and in writing) to a broad range of complex issues, procedures, policies, ideas, information and instructions.

    Ability to work with diverse faculty, staff, and student population. Ability to work as part of a team through close collaboration with colleagues and coordinate with others. Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team by establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships and maintain a positive and respectful attitude. Ability to consistently report to work on time prepared to perform the duties of the position. Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships & communicate clearly & effectively with vendors, staff, peers, administrators, Campus personnel, clients, state officials, and the public. Skill in sound time management including prioritizing assignments to complete work in a timely manner. Flexibility with changes in workload, under pressure of deadlines, competing requirements, heavy workload, and constant interruptions. Ability to work under pressure and remain calm and focused, and to calm and give focus to others in an extremely hectic fast-paced work environment.

    Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."

    Education and Experience

    • Equivalent to a bachelor's degree with upper or graduate coursework in counseling and guidance, human relations, or related fields and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.

    • Five years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas preferred.

    • Master's degree or work-in-progress in student services preferred.

    Physical Summary
    • Medium work - Job involves lifting heavy-weight objects (20-40 pounds) and/or 20% - 40% of the job involves standing, squatting, kneeling, or walking. May require pushing or pulling objects within the weight limits.

    Licenses / Certificates

    Valid CA driver's license is preferred.

    •Employees who are required to operate motorized vehicles and/or use their personal vehicle more than once a month on university business are required to take a mandatory Defensive Driving course and enroll in the DMV Employee Pull Notice (EPN) Program.

    Compensation

    Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department’s fiscal resources.

    Hiring Range: The hiring range for this position is $5,276 - $6,716 per month commensurate with candidate's education, experience, skills, and training.

    CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,276 - $7,517 per month.

    Time Base

    1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.

    Duration of Appointment

    This is a temporary position for 1 year with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.

    Additional Information
