    Position Summary

    Under the direction of the Associate Vice President, Educational Equity Programs and Student Success (AVP), the Director of the MLK Center (Director) is responsible for providing vision, leadership, and administration of the MLK Center. They serve as the chief administrative leader of the MLK Center, supervising all operations and serving as the advocate for the Center’s programs and needs.

    The MLK Center provides comprehensive support to students by providing resources, information, and opportunities to support learning; empowering students’ holistic, academic, and personal development; providing general advising and college skills coaching; creating an interactive role for students and their families within the campus community and beyond; and fostering pride in Sacramento State. The Director manages programming, communications, and events for students served by the Center so they have access to the support they need to succeed towards retention and graduation.

    The Director is also responsible for building strategic partnerships with on and off-campus departments and organizations to build goodwill, fundraise, and elevate the public understanding of the unique populations served by the MLK Center. These strategic partnerships include building a system to track program-affiliated alumni past graduation and into the workforce. The Director will envision, plan, and develop regular opportunities for alumni to engage and give back to Sacramento State in the form of time (volunteering) or financial gifts (fundraising). These opportunities should be collaborative across campus departments, programs, and divisions.

    FLSA: Exempt (not eligible for overtime)

    Anticipated Hiring Range: $ 6,666 per month - $7,083 per month

    CSU Classification Salary Range: $ 4,135 per month - $ 12,288 per month

    The MLK Center is a central hub for the exploration of African American heritage and culture. The overall Center is designed to foster an ethos of success that permeates the scholarly experience, the community and the world by setting a tone of change and lifelong improvement that inspires and fulfills the dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Students.

    The Center partners with local businesses and community organizations to assist students in making college and career connections. In addition, the MLK Center coordinates robust cultural programming to foster a sense of belonging, student inclusion, and cultural empowerment.

    Required Qualifications

    Education:
    Master’s Degree in related field (e.g., public relations, communications, public administration, marketing, education, counseling, journalism, social sciences, etc.) from an accredited institution of higher education or equivalent work experience.
    Experience:
    Relevant experience in program design, development, and administration and project management. Experience in preparing and overseeing various types of publications (e.g., print, web, email, social media, networking). Experience with or knowledge of student development. Experience with recruiting and retaining volunteers and developing and managing budgets.
    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    Strong interpersonal and communication skills and working knowledge of public relations, marketing strategies, and event planning. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, university administration, faculty, and staff and build successful community partnerships with other educational institutions, businesses, or non-profit foundations. Strong management skills, proven ability to recruit, hire, and professionally develop staff and managers to create a highly productive team. Excellent organizational, entrepreneurial, creative, and strategic skills. Appropriate judgment and problem-solving skills. Thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to successfully perform the duties of the position. Commitment to maintaining a welcoming and inclusive environment with diverse colleagues and constituents including faculty, students, staff, and members of the community

    Preferred Qualifications

    Experience with or knowledge of advocacy programs that connect constituents and stakeholders with community leaders and elected officials. Experience working with student-centric programs in higher education. Demonstrated record of success overseeing a cultural or identity-based Center, and supporting underrepresented minority students.
