    Position Scope

    Hiring Range: $20.02 - $25.00

    Salary range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.

    Hiring range is an estimate of the compensation amount for the selected candidate. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and equity amongst other City employees in a similar position.
    Under general supervision, performs work augmenting the activities of Police Officers and other Police Department personnel.

    Primary Duties and Responsibilities

    The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as a comprehensive list of all duties performed by all employees in this classification, only a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties including, but not limited to.
    • Responds to calls for Police service not requiring sworn law enforcement presence. Conducts investigations and completes reports as necessary.
    • Performs criminal or driving history checks and issues citations.
    • Communicates with the general public, other City employees, management, and public officials to explain departmental report procedures.
    • Moves and sets up traffic cones, barricades, and flares to control crowds and traffic at hazards and accidents.
    • Responds to animal nuisance complaints when Animal Control is unavailable or is delayed and immediate response is required. Picks up stray animals when observed.
    • Prepares written documents and reports. Assists with various administrative duties as needed such as courier services, filing, stocking patrol vehicles, etc.
    • Enters or retrieves data on a personal computer. Communicates with dispatch using a laptop computer and/or police radio.
    • Testifies in court on circumstances relevant to job-related incidents.
    • Performs other duties as assigned or required.


    Minimum Qualifications & Position Requirements

    Education and Experience:

    Graduation from high school or GED required. Experience in a law enforcement environment preferred. Minimum of two years face-to-face public contact experience involving interpretation, explanation and enforcement of policies and/or procedures is preferred. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of law enforcement activities and the organization of a police department.
    • Knowledge of various statutes, ordinances, and traffic codes (Including but not limited to traffic, parking, criminal, animal and City codes) relating to the duties performed.
    • Knowledge of City of Buckeye geography and street locations, and the community services provided by other public and private agencies.
    • Ability to read, comprehend and follow departmental policies and procedures.
    • Ability to prepare clear, concise, and comprehensive written reports meeting police writing requirements.
    • Ability to observe, comprehend, retain, and recall factual information.
    • Ability to work without direct supervision, exercise independent judgment and prioritize work assignments.
    • Ability to operate technical equipment such as MDC, copier, printer, etc.
    • Ability to deal effectively with coworkers, City officials, and the general public in routine and emergency situations. Must be able to use patience, tact, and persuasion while interacting with people who are angry, confused, injured, victimized, and/or hostile.
    • Skill in using training, experience, and knowledge to identify potentially dangerous situations, and resolve incidents minimizing injury to self and/or other persons and damage to property.
    • Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice, and desire to help when assisting the public.
    • Skill in operating a personal computer and software applications to enter and retrieve data.


    Additional Information

    Must possess a valid Arizona Driver's License by hire date and be at least 18 years of age. Must not have been convicted of or adjudged to have violated traffic regulations governing the movement of a vehicle with a frequency indicating disrespect for traffic laws or a disregard for the safety of other persons on the highway. Rotating shift work (depending on assignment) is required. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. and work in various weather conditions. Due to the nature of the position, some activities may involve an element of danger and exposure to chemicals such as mace. Uniform is required. Because of the confidential, sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a background investigation and polygraph is required. In addition, candidates given a conditional job offer will be required to pass a medical and drug screening.

    12 Month Goals:
    • Successful completion of on-the-job training within all facets of the position.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of various statutes, ordinances, and traffic codes.
    • Demonstrate knowledge of City of Buckeye geography and street locations.
