    Welder Vehicle Equipment Mechanic I
    DPW | Office of Fleet Services

    General Description and Classification Standards:

    The Welder Vehicle Equipment Mechanic I performs semi-skilled work related to the maintenance, repair, and fabrication of fleet vehicles and equipment. This role involves performing welding tasks, diagnostic testing, and other maintenance activities to support fleet operations. Duties include repairing, fabricating, and maintaining vehicles, tow trucks, forklifts, and various equipment used in the garage's daily operations. The incumbent follows standard procedures and receives supervision from the Fleet Manager and Supervisor.

    Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

    The following are typical responsibilities for this position and should not be considered exclusive. Other duties may be assigned as needed.
    • Perform welding and fabrication: Weld, cut, and fabricate metal parts for vehicle repairs, modifications, and structural reinforcement.
    • Complete maintenance and repair work: Conduct minor repairs, replace worn drive belts, hoses, filters, and brakes on vehicles and off-road equipment.
    • Assist with diagnostic tests: Utilize diagnostic tools to assess vehicle issues and repair needs; assist in identifying and repairing mechanical faults.
    • Fleet management support: Review service histories, verify warranties, and schedule towing for inoperable vehicles.
    • Operate equipment: Maintain and operate equipment such as tow trucks, forklifts, battery power packs, auto code scanners, and key cutters.
    • Post-service inspections: Ensure proper functioning of vehicles and equipment after maintenance or repair services.
    • Reporting: Collect and report data on vehicle downtime, labor, and repair history for fleet management purposes.

    Follows standardized procedures and written instructions to complete assigned tasks.

    Leadership Provided:

    May oversee work performed by apprentices or temporary workers, as needed.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Knowledge:
      • Welding and metal fabrication techniques.
      • Automotive repair principles, including diesel and collision repair.
    • Skills:
      • Skilled in operating welding equipment, diagnostic scan tools, and general mechanic tools.
      • Proficiency in using computers for reporting and diagnostic purposes.
    • Abilities:
      • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
      • Maintain strong working relationships with colleagues and customers.
      • Troubleshoot and solve mechanical and structural issues efficiently.

    Work Environment and Physical Requirements:
    • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more occasionally.
    • Ability to work with tools on vehicles lifted above head and in confined spaces.
    • Prolonged standing, walking, or sitting is required.
    • Exposure to excessive noise and work both indoors and outdoors.
    • Shift schedules may include evenings, weekends, and holidays.


    Qualifications:

    Minimum Qualifications - Education and Experience:
    • High School Diploma or GED.
    • Completion of a 1-year technical or vocational welding or mechanical course.
    • 1 year of experience in welding, general automotive repair, or diesel maintenance.

    Preferred Education & Experience:
    • Completion of a 1-year technical course in welding or automotive repair and 3 years of experience in general automotive, diesel, and collision repair.
    • Possess two Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications.

    Licenses and Certifications:
    • Valid State of Georgia Class B CDL License or must obtain within six months of employment.
