Definition and Class CharacteristicsThe County of Nevada, Public Works Fleet Division is offering an internship opportunity in partnership with the Nevada Joint Union High School District. Students enrolled in the CTE program are welcome to apply!This position will be hosted in the Nevada County Public Works Fleet Services Department and will report directly to the Fleet Services Manager or the Supervising Mechanic.
Functions of Agency/Department:The Nevada County Fleet Services Department is responsible for the acquisition, utilization, repair, and replacement of the vehicle and equipment fleet for the County of Nevada. The County of Nevada fleet program includes automobiles, heavy equipment, transit buses, and other associated machinery and equipment.
Intern Duties and Responsibilities:Under general supervision, inspects, services, and repairs County vehicles; and performs related work as required. Intern duties will be assigned based on skill level and work available and may include tire rotations and replacement, oil and filter changes, and wiper blade replacements. Battery replacement, fuses, bulbs/lamp replacements, and general vehicle maintenance.
Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to the following: - Maintains County vehicles and a fleet of transit buses powered by gasoline, diesel, CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), and electricity (Zero Emission) performing preventive maintenance by time and mileage.
- Inspects vehicle systems including differentials, transmissions, transfer cases, drive shafts, wiring, hoses, fuel lines, air lines, gas lines (CNG), fuel tanks and mounts, frames, springs, shackles, steering, brakes, tires, and wheels.
- Performs diagnostics on engine drive-ability problems, powertrain problems, fluid leaks, electrical component problems, steering systems, alignment problems, and braking problems.
- Compiles a list of parts for the completion of the job and orders parts from suppliers.
- Removes lubricating fluids and replaces with correct type and amount and removes and replaces filters.
- Repairs vehicle systems including water pumps, cooling systems, tires, brakes, exhaust systems, drive lines, electrical systems, lights, turn signals, suspensions, steering, etc.
- Installs and removes tires on pick-up trucks and large earth-moving equipment and performs related work associated with the running of the tire service truck in the County service area.
- Keeps records, including required CHP paperwork and county service records.
Candidates selected for the position would be asked to perform a range of duties from very basic activities to those requiring higher skill levels to enhance interns' familiarity and skillset in the automotive repair industry.
Interns need to be able to stand or walk much of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds. Any disabilities preventing these standards of work will be accommodated as we are able.
Educational Requirements, Skills, Training, or Qualifications:This Internship is designed for Advanced Automotive Technology students participating in the Nevada Union Joint High School District Career Technical Education Program. Must have a neat appearance, be detail-oriented, reliable, good written and oral communication skills. The County is a Microsoft Windows enterprise environment.
Time Commitment:Minimum of two school periods per day or 6-8 hours per week, four days per week during each school semester. Hours will be scheduled in (2) hour blocks in alignment with the school bell schedule. A typical schedule would require students to participate from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM, Tuesday through Friday. Monday of each week will be reserved for classroom instruction on the school campus.
Benefits of participating in an internship:This program prepares interns to contend for entry-level automotive technician/mechanic positions. Through participation in the program, interns will acquire hands-on knowledge and skills related to:
- Principles and practices about the maintenance and repair of all types of passenger, heavy-duty, and electrical vehicles and related equipment
- Operation of hand tools and or air tools including air drills, ratchets, guns, grinders, and electric drills
- Operation of specialty tools including volt/ohm meters, brake lathe, air conditioning machine, engine diagnostic scope analyzer, micrometers, dial indicators, and vehicle lifting devices
- Safety and safe working practices and conditions in an automotive facility.
Importance of keeping current with changing technologies related to the automotive repair industry. - Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing a variety of mechanical and electrical problems.
- Determining if a vehicle or piece of equipment is safe to operate.
- Use of computer programs related to maintenance tracking and parts requisitions.
- Build their resume and explore career options and employment opportunities.
- Gain an understanding of the local government workforce and culture.
- Develop communication and interpersonal skills to aid in future job interviews.
Interns who are earning school credit through an educational program may be eligible for a $298.00 stipend per semester, no more than $599.00 per calendar year upon completion of the internship (Board Resolution 21-110).
