  • Job Description

    The City of Irvine seeks entry-level and journey-level automotive/heavy duty vehicle technicians to fill a vacancy within the Fleet Services division. This position will perform routine scheduled maintenance as well as diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical problems and perform major mechanical and electrical repairs to the City's fleet, including transit vehicles and heavy equipment.

    Your Impact
    • Inspect, maintain and diagnose automobiles, trucks, off-highway equipment, carts, specialty tools, and equipment.
    • Maintain a variety of power plants including diesel, gasoline, hybrid, electric, and compressed natural gas.
    • Perform routine preventative maintenance such as safety inspections, changing oil and filters, replacing brakes, and patching or replacing tires.
    • Complete a variety of highly skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance on heavy vehicles and equipment including excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, backhoes, and loaders.
    • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic equipment, clutches, drive shafts, and u-joints.
    • Fabricate, weld, and modify parts and equipment such as panels, brackets, light stands, equipment boxes, and battery boxes.
    • Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with vendors, City maintenance/repair personnel, City vehicle drivers and City equipment operators.

    Best Fit
    • Entry-level experience in automotive or heavy-duty vehicle maintenance.
    • Demonstrate strong interpersonal communication skills to work with City staff, contracts, vendors, and dealers.
    • Mechanic knowledge including engine to electrical, heavy to light-duty vehicles, CNG, and alternative fuel systems.
    • Class B commercial driver's license highly desirable.
    Minimum Qualifications
    • High school diploma or equivalent with vocational/technical training in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.
    • Three years of vehicle/equipment maintenance and repair experience, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
    • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate California driver's license.
