    The Bureau of Environmental Services (BES) Engineering Services Group is seeking candidates for a Materials Testing Technician II position in the BES Materials Testing Laboratory (MTL). The MTL provides construction materials testing services to various bureaus throughout the City of Portland, OR.

    The Materials Testing Technician II for the Bureau of Environmental Services works under general supervision in an A2LA-certified laboratory environment. The technician performs specialized materials testing assignments, operates, calibrates, and maintains testing equipment and tools, and performs related duties as assigned.

    A Materials Testing Technician II inspects and tests construction materials in the field and laboratory; inspects and measures cast iron and welded steel products; stores and logs samples; maintains equipment; trains lower tier technicians in work processes and procedures and supplies technical information to the City's design and construction staff.

    Applicants should specifically address and demonstrate in their cover letter and résumé how their education, training, and/or experience meet each of the following minimum qualifications:

    Knowledge of laboratory tests, field testing procedures, construction inspections, and specifications related to public works construction.Ability to perform a wide variety of materials testing assignments, including but not limited to sampling and testing of concrete, soil, aggregate, and asphaltic concrete for various physical properties. Knowledge of materials testing procedures, able to interpret and adhere to standards of materials testing including American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT); including use of materials testing equipment and proper sampling techniques.Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with bureau management and staff, contractors, and others during the course of work. Communicates effectively and professionally with project team members and clients, such as when providing technical knowledge and test results to internal and external stakeholders. Able to work both independently and in team settings. Demonstrates a commitment to workplace safety and compliance with City policies.
    Applicants must also possess:
    • High school diploma / GED.
    • The ability to acquire Nuclear Densometer Safety Training certification, ACI Field Tech I certification, and ODOT QCT certification within the first 3 months of employment.
    • The ability to acquire additional ODOT material testing certifications as needed within the first year of employment (CDT, CAgT, CEBT, CAT1, etc.).
    • A valid state driver's license and an acceptable driving record at the time of hire.

    • Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be placed on the equally ranked eligible list.

    Step 4: Selection (Interview): Week of Novem ber 04 , 2024

    • The hiring bureau will review and select candidates to interview.
