    Description

    Basic Function

    Under moderate supervision, performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled repairs, installation and maintenance procedures relating to mechanical and electrical components and systems of Metro's Bus & Rail facilities and Gateway Headquarters building.

    Examples of Duties

    Bus
    • Performs preventive and restorative maintenance of shop and bus servicing equipment and electrical systems, including bus washer systems, fueling stations, and roll-up garage doors using basic tools of mechanical trade
    • Troubleshoots and maintains systems with programmable logic and solid state controllers, including automated storage and retrieval systems, robotic paintings equipment, and heavy equipment hoists
    • Drives Metro maintenance vehicles, including utility trucks and cargo vans, to various locations to repair and maintain Metro facilities and equipment
    Rail
    • Performs preventive and restorative maintenance of rail station, rail division, and maintenance-of-way servicing equipment and electrical systems, including sump pumps, sewage ejectors, emergency egress and platform hatches, fire suppression systems, and fire rated doors using basic tools of mechanical trade
    • Checks and maintains fire pumps, fire sprinklers, and wet and dry standpipes
    • Performs complex wiring, installation, and utilization of conduits
    • Drives Metro maintenance vehicles, including utility trucks, cargo vans, stake bed trucks, dump trucks, and hi-rail trucks, to various locations and along the rail and orange lines to repair and maintain Metro facilities
    • Provides safety watch support by directing train movement and performing flagging while supporting maintenance and contractor personnel
    Gateway Headquarters Building
    • Performs preventive and demand maintenance of high rise headquarters building equipment and electrical systems, including fire pumps and fire alarm system
    • Troubleshoots and maintains systems with programmable logic and solid state controllers
    Generic
    • Installs and maintains a wide range of electrical apparatus, including electrical circuits, switches, solenoids, control boards, motors, generators, yard lighting, and three-phase industrial systems up to 480 volts
    • Tests and measures voltage, current and resistance using electrical test instruments
    • Performs design, fabrication, and welding of a variety of parts and equipment
    • Repairs and maintains structural framing of walls, roofs, and stairs; repairs jambs, drop ceilings, drywall and partitions using basic tools of construction trades
    • Troubleshoots mechanical and electrical problems using blueprints, specifications, and schematic diagrams
    • Contributes to ensuring that the EEO policies and programs of Metro are carried out


    Minimum Qualifications

    • 4 years' experience performing construction, masonry, mechanical and electrical facilities maintenance work on mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic equipment in a large facility environment; and installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of AC and DC equipment, electric motors, and controls, including voltages up to 480 volts, programmable logic and solid state controllers
    • Completion of 2 years or more full-time training or education in Industrial Technology, Electrical Maintenance, Construction or similar program at a recognized trade school or apprenticeship program may be substituted for 1 year's experience
    • Valid California Class C driver's license

    • Mechanical and electrical design, construction, installation, and maintenance practices, procedures, methods, and equipment as found in a manufacturing or maintenance facility environment
    • Basic electrical/ electronic theory
    • Federal, state, and local electrical codes

    Abilites
    • Install, maintain, and repair mechanical and electrical equipment
    • Troubleshoot and correct equipment problems
    • Safely operate Metro vehicles
    • Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools
    • Read and understand blueprints, wiring diagrams, and schematics
    • Communicate effectively with others
    • Follow instructions
    • Move objects weighing up to 75 pounds
    • Work at heights up to 75 feet
    • Travel to off-site locations within a reasonable timeframe
    • Read, write, speak, and understand English

    Special Conditions
    • Must be able to obtain a Class A drivers license
    • Must be able to respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in any and all types of weather conditions
    • Must comply with all California Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal/OSHA) regulations and utilize approved safety equipment and personal protective gear including, but not limited to, respirators, eye and hearing protective devices (HPD), if and when required
    • Must have normal color vision
    • Must provide own tools of the trade
    • Positions assigned to Rail are considered safety-sensitive and subject to drug and alcohol testing, including random testing, under Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations
    • Work may be required in tunnels or on bridges
