    What You'll Be Doing

Animal Health Care Receiving Technicians (AHCTs) perform all intake evaluations, vaccines, pathway planning, and paperwork for all incoming animals. The AHCTs are often the first person to handle each incoming animal and should be well versed in animal behavior in order to prevent bites/scratches to themselves or teammates. It is the responsibility of the AHCTs to vaccinate/process each incoming animal according to protocol and using humane handling techniques. "Vaccinations" include but are not limited to FVRCP vaccines, DA2PP vaccines, blood draws, heartworm testing, parvovirus testing, intranasal Bordetella, de-wormers, etc. Each AHCT is expected to become proficient in vaccinations, humane animal restraint, and providing accurate vaccine records for each animal.

While performing intake procedures, the AHCT staff are responsible for noting any behavioral or medical abnormalities and relaying this information to the veterinary team. Each AHCT will be required to pass an exam and practical within the first six months to become a Certified Rabies Vaccinator (CRV) so as to be able to vaccinate incoming animals and public animals against the rabies virus. AHCT staff place each incoming animal on a "pathway" within the Center after intake processing. Some examples of "pathways" include, but are not limited to rescue and/or foster only, awaiting vet exam, awaiting behavioral assessment, available for adoption, awaiting euthanasia, etc. Each AHCT is required to make decisions daily, in conjunction with management, about the placement of all incoming animals and whether or not each animal can be safely rehomed.

The AHCT team performs the majority of the euthanasia at the Wake County Animal Center. Each AHCT will be required to pass an exam and practical within the first six months to become a Certified Euthanasia Technician. All AHCT staff are expected to become proficient in euthanasia both in physical technique, but also regarding humane, stress free handling and providing an animal with a "good death" (which is the meaning of the word euthanasia.) AHCTs perform various tasks per day that include things such as, but are not limited to: SAFER behavior assessments, cleaning CI (the feline URI ward), cleaning DI (the canine medical ward), assisting Kennel Staff, handling fractious or aggressive animals, assisting the Veterinary Team, dispensing meds (as prescribed) twice daily, assisting Animal Control, providing back up for large scale hoarding or cruelty investigations, adoption counseling, deep cleaning the entire Center, preparing animal cadavers for rabies testing, assisting in the training of new employees from all departments as well as daily monitoring of animal health both physical and behavioral.
