    San Francisco State University, School of Theatre & Dance offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Theatre Arts beginning August 2025. We seek a colleague whose teaching and creative activity include live performance and theatrical Stage Management and/or Production Management. The primary assignment will include teaching theatre management in the undergraduate theatre curriculum. Secondary assignments may include teaching in lighting design or a sub-specialty within the candidate’s expertise. We are especially interested in qualified candidates with a demonstrated commitment -- through their research, teaching, and service -- to the success of our diverse student body, especially our Black and LatinX students.

    Required qualifications
    • M.F.A. or equivalent terminal degree in theatre or related field from an accredited program. Terminal degree must be completed by the first day of employment.
    • Expertise and active achievement in live performance for theatrical stage/production management or other similar events.
    • University-level teaching in theatrical or entertainment management
    • Proven experience that demonstrates an ability to guide undergraduate students through a theatrical production process.
    • Demonstrated ability to work with students from historically under-represented communities and incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works and their creation processes.

    About the Department

    The School of Theatre & Dance offers an innovative program of practical and theoretical courses for undergraduate and graduate students whose interests center on various aspects of educational and professional theatre and/or dance. As a center for the training of future artists and educators, the School of Theatre & Dance is committed to introducing a diversity of performance practices and cultures to students. Our school currently enrolls 150 undergraduate students. The National Association of Schools of Theatre (NAST) accredits the B.A. and M.A. theatre arts degrees within the School of Theatre & Dance.

    Responsibilities


    The position requires teaching, mentoring and advising students; serving as production coordinator for the School of Theatre & Dance productions; continuing an active program of creative work in one’s area of specialty; serving on departmental, college, and university committees.

    Compensation

    The Assistant Professor (Academic Year) classification salary range is:

    $95,000 - $97,000 annually (12 monthly payments per academic year).

    Salary offered is commensurate with experience and qualifications. In addition, the California Equal Pay Act prohibits employers from paying its employees less than those of the opposite sex and/or another race or ethnicity for substantially similar work ( https://www.dir.ca.gov/dlse/california_equal_pay_act.htm ).

    Professional development funds, moving expenses, start-up funds, and a reduced teaching load may be available.
