    What You'll Be Doing

    Wake County has an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Housing - Social Worker Supervisor!

    In Wake County, 91,000 households are considered cost-burdened spending 30% or more on housing. Moreover, 42,000 renter householders are extremely cost-burdened, meaning they are spending more than half of their income on gross rent, with 60% or 26,000 of these renters earning an income less than $24,000 a year. Given the number of cost burdened families and the increasing cost of living, it is extremely important to provide financial assistance and support services to residents to prevent the loss of the affordable housing they currently have.

    The Housing Resource Team operates as a unit of the Homeless Services Division tasked with offering a full array of diversion, prevention/relocation and housing identification/navigation services to ensure that fewer citizens become homeless and that citizens who need affordable housing are matched to the affordable housing available in Wake County.

    Duties include:
    • Interview individuals who are experiencing a housing crisis
    • Assess and verify tenancy problems, income and financial assistance needs
    • Negotiate with landlords regarding late payments, damage or lease violations
    • Consult with legal services staff regarding actions to prevent evictions
    • With client permission, request mediation services for more serious conflict
    • Connect household members with employment services
    • Recommend financial assistance and services needed to resolve current tenancy problems
    • With the household, develop a housing plan with goals for successful case closing and implement plan
    • Provide information to individuals regarding employment, financial and other community resources
    • Maintain required data on all cases

Not only do more units of affordable housing need to be built, housing services must be provided to support families and individuals to access or maintain safe, decent, affordable housing. Affordable housing is also critical to preserving Wake County’s economic competitiveness by offering housing for workers at all income levels, supporting housing stability and economic opportunity for its residents and furthering Wake County’s commitment to healthy and inclusive growth. The Department’s programs include: Community Revitalization, Development Financing, Homeless and Prevention Services, Emergency Shelter, Support Services and Permanent Supportive Housing.

    The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

    • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field
    • One year of job-related experience
    • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
    • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

    Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

    • Master’s degree in Human Services, Health, Housing or related field

    • Supervisory skills with the ability to provide guidance and professional support to staff and offer feedback
    • Knowledge of social work principles, techniques, practices and their application to complex casework
    • Considerable and knowledge of treatment planning
    • Ability to establish a rapport with clients and build interpersonal relationships

    Emergency Service Worker Statement

    In the event of an emergency, as determined by the County Manager or designee, participation in preparedness and response operations should be expected.
