    DEPARTMENT SUMMARY:

    The Department of Culture and Communication at California State University Maritime Academy is seeking applications from a diverse group of qualified individuals for a part-time lecturer pool on our Vallejo campus. The department is seeking experienced, well-organized, and student-centered individuals to teach in any of our concentrations: Developmental and Expository Writing (College Composition), Advanced Writing (GWR/GWAR), Speech/oral communication, and Critical Thinking. All classes are taught in-person on our Vallejo campus.

    Candidates must have at least a master’s degree, with a Ph.D. strongly preferred, in English, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related discipline. Preference will be given to candidates who have prior teaching experience at the college or university level and who can furnish evidence of strong teaching. Candidates should demonstrate their ability to interact and work effectively with a wide and culturally diverse range of students, including first-generation college students. Preference will be given to those with experience in working with diverse populations and fostering a collaborative, supportive and inclusive environment. Preference will also be given to those with relevant work experience and those who bring professional capabilities.

    This is a pool of part-time lecturers for the department to draw on as necessary and all appointments are temporary. Staffing decisions are made on a rolling basis typically beginning a few months prior to the start of an academic term right up to the beginning of the academic term. We recommend submitting your application at least 4 months before the beginning of an academic term to be considered for available positions.

    ABOUT CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY MARITIME ACADEMY (Cal Maritime): Located on a compact but scenic waterfront campus in Vallejo, California (30 miles northeast of San Francisco), California State University Maritime Academy (Cal Maritime) is a unique and specialized campus of the 23-campus system.     MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This is a temporary position in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

    The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses including Expository Writing, Advanced Writing (GWR/GWAR), Critical Thinking, Speech, or Literature.

    Qualified candidates must demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population and to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines.

    MINIMUM/REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    An earned Ph.D. degree in English, Comparative Literature, Rhetoric and Composition, or a closely related field is preferred. Closely related master’s degree, MFA, or ABD status may be acceptable depending on the position. We strongly encourage members of underrepresented groups to apply.

    SPECIAL CONDITIONS:

    The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.

    Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with CSUM. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may result in the withdrawal of the offer of employment. Note: CSUM cannot deny an applicant a position solely or in part due to a criminal conviction history until it has performed an individualized assessment and linked the relevant conviction history with specific job duties in the position being sought.

    Please note: Current employees who are offered positions on campus will be required to undergo a background check for any position where a background check is required by law or that CSUM has designated as sensitive.     SALARY COMPENSATION: Salary is commensur ate with the education, qualifications, and experience of the individual. A full-time unit load for a lecturer is 15 teaching units, also called WTUs.
    • The Salary schedule information for the Lecturer - Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

    Lecturer A (Range 2) - $5,007 - $6,359

    Lecturer B (Range 3) - $5,925 - $12,594

    • The anticipated hiring range is commensurate with the education and experience of the selected individual. The anticipated hiring range for full time will be between $5,676 - $6,000 per month, prorated based on unit load (WTUs).

    PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
    • Typical classroom and office environment are in a two-story building with elevator access.
