    Requirements

    MOS: 0904 (Navy), 46F1 (Air Force), 66E (Army)

    Education and Experience : Licensed Vocational Nurse

    Licenses and Certificates : Licensed as a Vocational Nurse in the State of Texas by the State Board of Nurse Examiners or equivalent from a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Current CPR certification. Texas Class “C” Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.

    General Purpose

    Under direction, provides nursing support for patient care for a public health program.

    Typical Duties

    Provide assistance to nursing professionals. Involves: Interview patients or relatives and obtain information, medical history, immunization status, diet recall, height, weight and samples for laboratory testing to determine eligibility for program services and to provide support to the health program in providing patient care. Obtain and record vital signs and measurements to supplement medical history information. Draw blood through finger-prick, from vein or from infant’s heel and prepares for laboratory screenings. Conduct glucose testing and hematocrit tests. Dispense prescription and non prescription drugs as directed. Administer vaccinations to immunize patients at the direction of the registered nurse. Sterilize equipment and assembles equipment used by physician or nurse in patient examinations. Implement patient teaching in cooperation with the registered nurse or nutritionist. Assist mass vaccination clinics and/or screening clinics. Assist in coordinating clinic outreach programs. Participate in the development and implementation of strategies and tools that reflect setting up and running clinics. Identify opportunities to improve on standards or guidelines of patient care in a clinical setting. Maintain records and prepares oral and written reports, utilizing computer for data entry. Schedule patient appointments and patient’s home visits to obtain information, follow up care and increase quality of service.
