    The Position

    This a continuous Extra Help recruitment for Cook I in the Juvenile Hall. Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and will be reviewed weekly until the current vacancy is filled. The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future Extra Help vacancies as they occur over the next 12 months.


    About the Department of Probation & Juvenile Hall:
    The Probation Department operates adult and juvenile Court-related services in the areas of investigation and supervision with the mission to enforce court orders to inspire positive change, transform the live of offenders, victims, and families, and promote community safety. The Department is also responsible for the overall operation of the County’s Juvenile Hall, which provides custody, counseling, medical care and guidance of delinquent and custodial youth in a variety of short- and medium-term programs.     About the Position of Cook I - Extra Help

    Hourly Range: $26.42 (Step 1) to $31.06 (Step 5)
    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/25
    • 3.5% COLA increase effective 7/01/26
    • 32.0 hours of Winter Time Off (WTO)
    The Cook I works under general supervision, prepares, cooks and serves a variety of food for regular and special diets daily within the facility. In addition to having experience in preparing and cooking food in large quantities, the ideal candidate will be:
    • Passionate for food and cooking.
    • Able to obtain the Food Handler's card within six (6) months of appointment and must maintain the certificate for the duration of employment in this classification.
    • Aware of maintaining a safe, clean and sanitary environment.
    • Able to perform simple math computations in following recipes and other directions
    • Effective working with a wide variety of people.
    Extra Help positions are temporary assignments that are non-benefited and are scheduled up to 29 hours per week (up to 1 , 000 hours per fiscal year.) Extra Help employees are not eligible for promotional opportunities that are open to regular part-time and full-time employees.

    Position Requirements for Cook I:
    To qualify for the Cook I classification, an individual must possess any combination of experience and education that would likely produce the required knowledge and abilities. A desirable combination is:
    • Experience: One year of experience in preparing, cooking, and serving meals in large quantities.
    • Education: Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write on the level required for successful job performance

    The Recruitment Process :
    Applications will be accepted on a continuous basis and will be reviewed weekly until current extra help vacancy is filled.Review and scoring of supplemental questions will be completed by departmental Subject Matter Experts (SME) on a bi-weekly basis until the current vacancies are filled. Those who successfully pass the SME review may be contacted for departmental interviews.Departmental interviews will take place at a date determined by the department. Only the most qualified candidates will be referred to the department. The Human Resources Department reserves the right to change the recruitment process at any time.

    Disaster Service Workers:
    Napa County employees automatically become Disaster Service Workers.     SALARY -
    Salaries are based on a five-step range. Appointments are usually made at the beginning step with advances occurring at six months and the completion of each year thereafter. Salary rates are reviewed annually.
