    General Description and Classification Standards

    This position is responsible for providing labor and employment law advice and counsel to all City of Atlanta departments. The City employs over eight thousand (8,000) employees. The attorney acts as a key strategic advisor to the Department of Human Resources (HR), and serves as a liaison between HR and the Department of Law, elevating certain matters that require the attention of the City Attorney. Also, the attorney coordinates with other attorneys who give advice and counsel operationally to departments and interfaces with the attorneys handling employment litigation.

    The Attorney will:

    Have a strong understanding of federal, state and local employment and labor laws.

    Make recommendations, give feedback and provide guidance on the full range of employment law issues including, but not limited to, hiring, discipline, terminations, accommodations, workers’ compensation, unemployment, employee pay and benefits, leaves of absences, performance management, social media, and grievances.

    Evaluate EEOC and state fair employment agency discrimination charges and other types of employment-related complaints, such as federal and state departments of labor, and make recommendations for potential resolution and/or to mitigate damages.

    Create and deliver training programs for HR professionals and its business partners on trends, recent developments, and noteworthy employment issues impacting the workplace such as discrimination, harassment, disability, leaves of absence and documentation of disciplinary actions.

    Review and provide advice on employee communications, HR policies and procedures, and related legislation.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Education and Experience: Juris Doctorate degree required. Must be a member of good standing with the State Bar of Georgia or the ability to obtain membership within one (1) year of employment. Must have ten (10) years relevant experience.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Ten (10) years relevant experience. Experience in municipal, county, and/or constitutional law.
