    The Job

    Earn an Annual Salary Up to $93,579.20

    Salary negotiable commensurate with qualifications.

    The Department of Risk Management is recruiting for Workers' Compensation Adjusters who receive and review workers' compensation claims and reports and determine if occupational illness or injury is compensable; develop documentation for claim reports by reviewing and requesting substantiating reports from physicians, supervisors and witnesses; and explain to injured workers their benefits and legal rights under Workers' Compensation Laws.

    WE ARE HIRING FOR THE FOLLOWING TWO CLASSIFICATIONS:
    Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainee $49,566.40 - $66,539.20 Annually
    Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainees work under immediate supervision and receive training and acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for all aspects of workers' compensation claims adjusting.
    Workers' Compensation Adjuster $68,099.20 - $93,579.20 Annually
    Workers' Compensation Adjusters independently processes a wide variety of workers' compensation claims including those that are complex or sensitive.

These positions offer a lucrative compensation and benefits package that includes bi-annual step increases of 2.5% up to max step, and the benefits listed below:

    Modified Benefit Option: As an alternative to the traditional benefits package, you may also be eligible to elect the Modified Benefit Option (MBO) that provides an increased base rate of pay ($1.75 per hour above the base rate of pay) with modified benefits. For more detailed information on the MBO for eligible Teamsters classifications, refer to the MBO - Teamsters (BbOU) .

    A hybrid telework schedule may be offered upon satisfactory work performance. The department may also offer a 9/80 schedule, where incumbents enjoy a nine-day biweekly schedule.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Promotion : Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainees serve under trainee conditions and are eligible for promotion to Workers' Compensation Adjuster ($68,099.20 - $93,579.20 annual salary) with successful completion of a training program and receipt of a satisfactory work progress report. Incumbents must promote within (12) months or be terminated. A valid California Self Insurance Administrator Certificate is required and must be obtained within (12) months of hire.

    Certificate: A valid California Self Insurance Administrator Certificate is required at the time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment. (Workers' Compensation Adjuster applicants only)

    Pre-Employment Process: Prior to appointment,applicants must successfully pass a background check, including fingerprinting, verification of employment history, and physical exam/drug test.

    Travel: Travel throughout the county may be required. Employees will be required to make provision for transportation. At the time of hire, a valid California Class C driver license and proof of automobile liability insurance must be produced and maintained for the individual providing the transportation.

    Minimum Requirements

    EXPERIENCE: Workers' Compensation Adjuster Trainee
    Experience: Two (2) years of experience working within a public or private sector organization as a workers' compensation claims assistant or medical only claims adjuster, which included calculating workers' compensation benefits, scheduling medical appointments, preparing benefit notices, and authorizing payment for medical appointments and procedures.

    Note: Experience with auto, medical, dental, or life insurance claims is not considered qualifying experience. Workers' compensation claims experience must be clearly demonstrated in the work experience section of the application.

    Substitution: Successful completion of courses taken toward the Insurance Education Association certificate (or comparable coursework involving State of California workers' compensation laws) may be substituted at a rate of one class for six (6) months of experience. Completed college coursework in finance or accounting, medical or paralegal studies, may be substituted at a rate of 12 semester (18 quarter) units for six (6) months of experience. Classes/coursework may substitute for a maximum of 12 months of the required experience . If substituting coursework for experience, transcripts must be attached and/or coursework must be listed in Supplemental Question #3.

    Workers' Compensation Adjuster
    Certificate: A valid California Self Insurance Administrator Certificate is required at the time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.

    Experience: Three (3) years of experience, within the last five (5) years, adjusting workers' compensation claims, including one (1) year adjusting complex litigated claims, such as continuous trauma, AOE/COE, stress claims, and safety claims.

    Substitution: Successful completion of college coursework in finance, accounting, medical or paralegal studies may be substituted for experience at a rate of 12 semester (18 quarter) units for six (6) months of experience up to a maximum of 12 months. Education may not substitute for the one (1) year of complex, litigated claims adjusting experience. If substituting coursework for experience, transcripts must be attached and/or coursework must be listed in Supplemental Question #3.
