    POLICE OFFICER CADET/POLICE OFFICER (5 POSITIONS AVAILABLE)
    Public Safety

    Salary Range: Police Officer: $6,840 - $7,669/Monthly

    Work Schedule : Rotating shift, weekends and holidays required; non-exempt classification.

    Essential Functions : The Police Officer patrols an assigned beat or district of the campus on foot or by vehicle to protect University personnel, property, and facilities against accidents, bodily harm, fire, theft, vandalism and illegal entry; enforces laws, codes, statutes, traffic and safety regulations; apprehends violators; provides general information and assistance to the public. Investigates calls for service; writes/files clear, concise reports of actions taken in the field; related crime and miscellaneous reports; escorts prisoner; appears in related court processes; assists in promoting crime prevention and self-protection for the campus population; conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations. The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Incumbents attend a P.O.S.T. certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the required P.O.S.T. training within the required timeframe and the discretion of management, the Police Officer Cadet is appointed to the classification of Police Officer (Class Code 8350) on a probationary basis.

    Required Qualifications & Experience : High school diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 21 years of age by the time of appointment to a sworn position, and a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Must pass pre-employment background investigation, physical agility and drug test, physical, psychological and reading /writing examinations; meet requirements of P.O.S.T. minimum standards of employment; possess a valid California Driver License; and have not been convicted of a felony in this or any other state or in any Federal jurisdiction. The incumbent must also demonstrate an interest or ability in working in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the California State University. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or continued employment of current California State University employees who may apply for the position.

    Police Officer Cadet : The Cadet is a non-sworn officer in a trainee capacity. Incumbent will attend a P.O.S.T. certified academy to develop the minimum qualifications necessary to assume a position as a sworn police officer. Upon successful completion of the requirement P.O.S.T. training within the required timeframe and the discretion of management, the Police Officer Cadet is appointed to the classification of Police Officer on a probationary basis.

    Police Officer : Graduation from a certified P.O.S.T. academy and possession of the basic course certificate. Duties at this level require a working knowledge of law enforcement methods and procedures, criminal codes and laws, and investigating techniques and procedures. The Police Officer performs general patrol and operational police duties and may assist in investigations or as a member on special teams or task forces. Incumbents may receive specialized on-the-job training to perform these specialized functions. The incumbent must have mental capacity, physical agility and learning potential to perform all aspects of POST trainings and police work. Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program, including obtaining a Basic Course Certificate is required for a Police Officer.

    Selection Process : Elements of the selection process includes: application, application review; written test, fitness test, oral interview, chief's interview, background check, (verification of qualifying credentials, review of criminal record, and verification through personal references); psychological examination, and physical examination that includes a drug screening. It is the policy of the California State University to test peace officer applicants for the demonstrated ability to perform all duties of the position and to determine freedom from any physical, mental, or emotional condition, which might adversely affect their ability to exercise the powers of a peace officer. An offer of employment is conditioned on successful completion of all testing requirements. Applicants who either refuse or fail any required test, or portion thereof, will not be appointed. An applicant not selected for the position may re-apply during any subsequent hiring process.

    California State University, Los Angeles, as part of the CSU system, is a State of California Employer. As such, the University requires all employees upon date of hire to reside in the State of California.

    As of January 1, 2022 the CSU Out-of-State Employment Policy prohibits the hiring of employees to perform CSU-related work outside the state of California.

    Desired Qualifications : A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Criminal Justice, Administration of Justice, or related field. Basic bilingual proficiency. Ability to use a personal computer for entry of police reports into the automated records management system (ARMS).
