THE POSITION The City of Ventura Parks & Recreation Department is hiring a Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II to assist in the maintenance of 800 acres of open space, 46 park locations, including iconic sites like Ventura Community Park and the Ventura Aquatic Center, two beaches and two municipal golf courses. WHAT YOU’LL DO The Facilities Maintenance Worker I/II performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled construction, installation, maintenance and repair work on municipal buildings and equipment. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Electrical - Repairs, replaces and maintains electrical wiring, fuses, switches, motors, generators, lighting systems, control systems, and other fixtures and equipment. Installs conduits, wires, pull boxes, and switches required in making additions, extension, or alternations in electrical systems. Troubleshoots and repairs damaged or worn electrical components. Trains and assists less experienced personnel. Aquatic Facility Maintenance - M aintains water chemistry, works on pumps, motors, chemical feeders, heaters, filters, booster pumps, slide and playground repairs. Carpentry - Makes repairs on doors, windows, floors, gates, roofs, and ceilings. Repairs, installs, and constructs tables, shelves, cabinets, counter tops and other wood and equipment fixtures. Performs hand and bench work, operating planers, joiners, drill presses, power saws, and other woodworking machinery. Installs tile and carpet as necessary. Constructs new walls, ceiling, and flooring. Finishes cabinets and counter tops as required. Constructs, installs, maintains, and repairs a variety of park equipment such as benches, tables, signs, fences, posts, and playground equipment. Trains and assists less experienced personnel. Painting - Prepares surfaces for painting or staining. Applies paint to buildings, fixtures, or equipment. Trains and assists less experienced personnel. Plumbing - Installs, maintains and repairs plumbing systems and a variety of plumbing fixtures such as faucets, sinks, toilets, and water heaters, and pumps. Unstops drains and toilets. Checks heating and ventilating equipment. Trains and assists less experienced personnel. H.V.A.C. - Troubleshoots mechanical systems for basic problems, performs routine maintenance, cleans and services units, adjusts thermostats and dampers, and coordinates with vendors as needed. General - Purchases needed supplies, parts, and materials. Writes service orders from verbal requests, completes paperwork when repairs are finished. Operates and maintains a computerized work order system. Maintains tools and equipment. Inspects park and building components and performs preventive maintenance. Moves and sets up furniture. Performs general locksmith duties. Opens and secures City buildings and facilities. Leads assigned temporary helpers. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Facilities Maintenance Worker I is the entry-level class in the facilities maintenance series. Under immediate supervision, incumbents perform entry to journey-level work in one or two trades and are expected to work at an increasing skill level in all of the trades utilized by the Facilities Maintenance Section. Under this training concept, incumbents are expected to advance to the Facilities Maintenance Worker II level. Facilities Maintenance Worker II is the journey-level class in the facilities maintenance series. Under general supervision, work is performed at a level approaching journey level skills in all the skilled trades utilized by the Facilities Maintenance Section including electrical, carpentry, plumbing, heating ventilation and air conditioning, and painting trades as well as at the full journey level in one or more trades. Positions are flexibly staffed and normally filled by advancement from Facilities Maintenance Worker I. When filled from the outside, the job requires the journey level skills described above. WHO YOU ARE The ideal candidate will have excellent customer service and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively on a team or individually. Essential Job Functions A Senior Water Service Worker is responsible for performing a combination of the following essential job functions: leads, inspects, and participates in the work of a field crew engaged in the installation, maintenance, and repair of services connections, water mains, meters, fire hydrants, water tanks, and pumping plant equipment such as pumps and valves; oversees traffic control, trench and shoring, confined space, and all other safety practices at work sites to ensure the safe and effective protection of workers and the public; trains staff and monitors compliance with safety regulations and work practices; completes all applicable paper work such as daily reports and work orders, traffic control plans, trench excavation check sheets, meter exchange and installation sheets, maintenance records, and inspection notes and reports; performs water disinfecting, sampling, and testing; uses hydraulic, pneumatic, and hand tools to break pavement, drills, digs and backfills trenches, and repairs pavement; makes connections to existing water mains such as fire hydrants, valves, pipelines, and water service connections; cuts, threads, solders, fits pipe and leads others in this work; investigates and resolves routine and complex customer concerns, including shut off procedures and water quality complaints; responds to emergencies during normally scheduled time off and may work unscheduled shifts to meet emergency requirements; tests water meters in the field and makes minor adjustments and repairs; cleans water tanks, pipes, and pumping plant equipment; supervises the cleaning and maintenance of tools and equipment; inspects, maintains, repairs, and replaces disinfecting equipment; conducts technical inspections of water system improvements performed by private contractors; transports construction equipment to and from work sites; and drives vehicles or equipment with a gross vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more to and from work sites as needed. Requirements SELECTION REQUIREMENTS Five years of experience in the installation, maintenance, or repair of water service facilities, one year of which must have been at the level of Los Angeles County's Class of Water Service Worker*. Experience in plumbing, steam fitting, or industrial pipe fitting work may be substituted for up to two years of the required experience. LICENSE A valid California Class C Driver license is required to perform job-related essential functions. A valid California Class A Driver License may be required for appointment to some positions in this class. A valid Water Treatment Operator Grade T1 Certificate and a valid Water System Distribution Operator Grade D3 Certificate issued by the California Department of Health Services may be required for appointment to this position. Essential Functions Locates and marks water and sewer lines, water valves, sewer manholes, and sewer laterals as requested through Arizona Blue Stake Center and required by State law prior to excavating. Investigates water leaks and reports of sewer stoppages. Determines appropriate cause of action. Repairs minor water leaks when required. Isolates water mains as part of repairs to lines, hydrants, or valves. Inspects sewers for flow and direction. Installs residential and commercial water meters for new home construction and replaces failed water meters. Sets construction flow meters, digital recorders, and hydrant meters. Responds to citizen requests on: water quality or pressure problems, sewer odor, and roach complaints. Observes and monitors data to determine compliance with prescribed operating and safety standards. Responds appropriately to correct operational and security deficiencies. Drives a motor vehicle in order to travel to various city sites to mark utility lines and make water distribution line repairs. CDL Assignment: Qualifies for a DOT Medical Certification Card on a regular basis as determined by the authorizing DOT physician as appropriate to the job assignment. Operate a dump truck for after-hours emergencies or as needed by the department. Drive and operate a Hydro Excavation truck to assist crews with soft digs or cleanup. Work Environment/Physical Demands Perform manual work that requires standing and moving for continuous periods of time, lifting, bending, and climbing stairs and rough terrain. Carry large valve keys and turn them, requiring substantial upper body twisting and force. Remove manhole covers, requiring swinging a sledge hammer, prying off, and dragging the heavy covers. Comply with all OSHA safety standards including Confined Space entry, Trenching and Shoring, and Traffic Barricade set up. Works in small areas and must climb ladders or steps to reach objects. May move and lift heavy objects (up to 50 pounds) both short and long distances. Exposure to dust, odor, noise, inclement weather, and temperature extremes. Drive a city vehicle or equipment maintaining constant vigilance to the road and surrounding area. May work rotating weekend shifts and a call-out schedule.
