Job Description and Duties Under the administrative direction of the Chief Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Law Division, the Senior Assistant Attorney General plans, organizes, and directs the work of the statewide Tort and Condemnation Section within the Civil Law Division of the Department of Justice. The Senior Assistant is responsible for supervision of the section's litigation and advice functions; serves as the Attorney General's principal liaison and point of contact for legal services with the section's clients; serves as technical and legal advisor to the Attorney General on matters within the section's legal program and on issues impacting the Department of Justice; represents the Attorney General, state agencies, and state employees before the courts; consults with the Chief Assistant in the development and formulation of litigation policy and program objectives, has principal responsibility for personnel management, and employee utilization within the section; provides direction and guidance to subordinates through supervising deputy structure; may personally assist subordinates in complex litigation; prepares annual budget requests and performs ongoing programmatic monitoring and reporting functions. The Senior Assistant is also responsible for supervision of the Government Claims Unit and has oversight over the Office’s Service Deputy Program. The Tort and Condemnation Section practices civil litigation. It defends the state and its agencies, departments, and employees in civil actions brought in federal and state courts for personal injury, wrongful death, property damage, and civil-rights claims. The section also prosecutes matters relating to the acquisition of real property for public purposes under the state’s power of eminent domain, defends inverse condemnation actions initiated by private property owners seeking compensation for a taking of or damage to the owner’s real property, and defends mass tort actions filed against the state and its agencies and departments arising out of events such as floods, earthquakes, and fires. The section also handles factually and legally complex construction arbitration and litigation cases that frequently involve multi-million dollar claims. While the position’s location is specified as statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered in Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco. Job Description and Duties Under the administrative direction of the Chief Assistant Attorney General of the Civil Law Division, the Senior Assistant Attorney General plans, organizes, and directs the work of the statewide Tort and Condemnation Section within the Civil Law Division of the Department of Justice. The Senior Assistant is responsible for supervision of the section's litigation and advice functions; serves as the Attorney General's principal liaison and point of contact for legal services with the section's clients; serves as technical and legal advisor to the Attorney General on matters within the section's legal program and on issues impacting the Department of Justice; represents the Attorney General, state agencies, and state employees before the courts; consults with the Chief Assistant in the development and formulation of litigation policy and program objectives, has principal responsibility for personnel management, and employee utilization within the section; provides direction and guidance to subordinates through supervising deputy structure; may personally assist subordinates in complex litigation; prepares annual budget requests and performs ongoing programmatic monitoring and reporting functions. The Senior Assistant is also responsible for supervision of the Government Claims Unit and has oversight over the Office’s Service Deputy Program. The Tort and Condemnation Section practices civil litigation. It defends the state and its agencies, departments, and employees in civil actions brought in federal and state courts for personal injury, wrongful death, property damage, and civil-rights claims. The section also prosecutes matters relating to the acquisition of real property for public purposes under the state’s power of eminent domain, defends inverse condemnation actions initiated by private property owners seeking compensation for a taking of or damage to the owner’s real property, and defends mass tort actions filed against the state and its agencies and departments arising out of events such as floods, earthquakes, and fires. The section also handles factually and legally complex construction arbitration and litigation cases that frequently involve multi-million dollar claims. While the position’s location is specified as statewide, the candidate selected for appointment can be headquartered in Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, San Diego, and San Francisco.
