The Position This position is eligible for a 5% Master ASE Incentive and $1.65/hour Night Shift Differential (if assigned). The City of Riverside is accepting applications for the position of SENIOR MECHANIC (CENTRAL GARAGE) to fill one (1) current vacancy in the FLEET DIVISION of the GENERAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT . The eligibility list established may be used to fill vacancies within various departments within this classification for up to six (6) months. Come be a part of this award-winning fleet team where, as a Senior Mechanic, you will perform skilled journey level work and mechanical repair work on a variety of Police fleet vehicles and equipment consistent with those found in a police fleet; servicing and performing repairs on police pursuit vehicles, mobile command stations, towed equipment, undercover vehicles and installed equipment such as emergency lighting systems, weapons security systems, docking stations, partitions, complex electrical systems and related equipment. Incumbent may perform repairs and installation of aftermarket electronic equipment such as radio communication systems, surveillance, systems, cellular communications, electrical load management and charging systems, as well as a variety of soldering, cable fabrication, and installations as well as diesel, compressed natural gas and gasoline powered automotive, construction and towed equipment. It is imperative that the incumbent have strong electrical skills and diagnostic capabilities. Assist/oversee vehicle and equipment repair work of semi-skilled mechanic; and do related work as required Work Performed Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Independently perform preventative maintenance inspections, diagnosis and repair mechanical defects on all but not limited to light and heavy duty vehicles, forklifts, refuse trucks, utility lifts and crane trucks, towed equipment, para-transit bus, sweepers, construction equipment, fire apparatus, police fleet vehicles, and standby generators. May be assigned to perform maintenance and repairs on fire equipment and apparatus; compressed natural gas filling station and dispensing equipment on an as-needed basis. Diagnose and repair computer controlled vehicles and equipment, emission systems and their related components. Disassemble components and repair or replace defective or worn parts. Perform minor and major overhauls and tune-ups on automotive and heavy-duty engines. Perform major repair work on drive-train, steering, hydraulic, electrical, suspension, air compression, air/hydraulic brake systems, ignition, hydraulic pumps and controls, and air conditioning systems. Perform skilled off-site inspections and servicing of generators and routine fire station equipment and apparatus inspections, and related repairs. Maintain and perform repair work on transmissions and differentials. Incumbent to work on specialized pursuit vehicles and their related systems such as, mobile data systems, emergency lighting, communications systems, weapons security systems, on-board cameras and recording devices, in-vehicle K9 release systems, vehicle outfitting, and various other related vehicles and equipment as needed. Perform and oversee major repairs and installation of new parts. Perform routine and complex vehicle and equipment inspections and maintenance. Perform occasional metal work such as cutting welding, soldering and minor fabrication. Inspect, maintain, breakdown, repair, and mount and balance tires on various city vehicles and equipment on an as needed basis. Maintain and repair gas and diesel powered light and heavy fire equipment and apparatus such as automobiles, trucks, pumps and generators on as-needed basis; perform brake inspections, diagnosis and perform related brake repairs and replacements. Make emergency field repairs to equipment and vehicles. Assist in providing direction and training to lesser skilled technicians on an as-needed basis. Maintain accurate computer based time and material records and properly annotate all work performed. Perform all tasks in accordance with applicable Federal and State safety standards. Maintain work area in a clean and neat condition and perform related work as required. Qualifications Education: High School graduation or satisfactory equivalent (GED), supplemented by specialized training in the maintenance and repair of gas and diesel-powered equipment. The completion of a recognized apprenticeship or possession of mechanical certifications from a professionally recognized institution is highly desirable. Experience: Five (5) years of skilled work experience in automotive and heavy equipment repair work of which three (3) years is at the journey level. Experience and certification in alternative fuel systems, compression and dispensing and/or experience in the maintenance and repair of specialized police vehicles, motorcycles and related equipment is highly desirable. Necessary Special Requirements : Possession of an appropriate, valid Class "C" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License upon appointment. Possession of a valid Class "A" California Motor Vehicle Operator's License during the probationary period. Possession of the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification is highly desirable. Successful completion of ASE Series test Medium & Heavy-duty Truck Series T1 through T8 Certifications in medium and heavy-duty truck specialty areas is required upon completion of probation. The incumbent must maintain all certifications throughout the course of employment in this classification. Required journey level hand tools sized to a minimum of 1 1/2 ".
