POSITION PURPOSE / IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION The Seasonal Park Ranger position is responsible for park regulation enforcement work, routine park maintenance, park projects, park patrol, water patrol, interpretation and visitor safety at Standley Lake Regional Park and Wildlife Refuge. Seasonal Park Rangers also assist with paddle craft rental transactions, gatehouse functions and campground operations. Recreation staff have the primary responsibility of ensuring the safety of program participants and promoting stewardship efforts.. This position is classified as safety-sensitive due to the nature of the work. Employees in this position may be subject to random drug testing and/or heightened supervision per the personnel policies and rules. Must be willing and able to work a varied schedule from mid-April through early October including weekends, evenings, and holidays. Seasonal Park Ranger training will begin on Wednesday, April 14th and last through Friday, April 30th. Park Rangers must be able to work varied daytime hours during this time period. The full salary range for this position is stated above. The starting range of pay is dependent on qualifications and experience of each individual candidate. We are posting this position in anticipation of hiring needs, with job offers to be determined once final needs are assessed. JOB SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS Essential Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks 1. Enforces park rules and regulations, Westminster Municipal Code, and Colorado State Boating laws and patrols park areas in vehicles, boat, and on foot 2. Issues summonses as necessary 3. Assists with paddle craft rental transactions, gatehouse operations and campground 4. Educates park visitors and provides general information and assistance 5. Performs ANS decontamination sprays on paddle craft 6. Performs routine maintenance on park facilities, vehicles and patrol boat 7. Prepares daily reports and patrol logs, incident reports, etc. 8. First Aid, CPR and AED certification (provided during training) 9. Responds appropriately to emergencies 10. Must possess a valid driver's license, provide proof of a safe driving record, and maintain a safe driving record for continued employment 11. Maintains regular and punctual attendance Other Duties and Responsibilities 1. Collects fees (entry fees and paddle craft rental fees) 2. Performs general park maintenance and clean-up on both land and water 3. Participates in rescue and first aid activities on both land and water 4. Protects park ecosystem including vegetation and wildlife 5. Maintains records Incumbent is accountable for all duties of this job, and other projects and responsibilities may be added at the City's discretion. POSITION REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS/PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Education, Experience, Skills, Formal Training, Licenses, and Certifications Required : Must be at least 21 years of age High school diploma or GED Previous experience in security, law enforcement, rule enforcement, or other compliance work and/or experience in Parks, Recreation, Open Space or Natural Resources or a similar field Valid driver's license and safe driving record Preferred : College-level coursework in Parks, Recreation, Natural Resources, or a related field Previous experience as a Park Ranger Any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, which would provide the required knowledge and skills, may be considered. Physical Requirements Due to the nature of work, sufficient physical stamina and strength are needed for: Frequent sitting to perform designated office tasks and to survey park for hazards and potential problems from a vehicle; constant standing and walking over uneven terrain in all weather conditions to address hazards and potential park violations with public; occasional running to address emergency situations Frequent squatting, bending, kneeling, balancing on a patrol boat, reaching overhead and below shoulder, and twisting to perform park maintenance and other related duties; occasional crawling and climbing to perform various park duties Frequent light and firm grasp to safely use tools and equipment; constant fine manipulation and handling to perform maintenance and other duties Occasional step up/down from vehicles and stairs; ability to safely operate vehicles and heavy equipment; normal near and far acuity to observe park for potential hazards and maintenance issues, and hearing to communicate with public, groups, and staff Constant lifting of up to fifty (50) pounds to move and place water buoys and rental equipment; frequent lifting of up to 100 pounds to move equipment; constant carrying of up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally carrying of up to 100 pounds of equipment and supplies; constant pushing and/or pulling of up to twenty-five (25) pounds, frequent pushing and/or pulling of fifty (50) pounds and occasional pushing and/or pulling of greater than 100 pounds of equipment, supplies, and material WORKING CONDITIONS Work is constantly performed outdoors with constant exposure to extreme temperatures. Position performs related duties and maintenance seasonally at a highly public, municipal park. This is a highly active, visible position within a multi-use municipal park, where periods of high activity and stress may exist. Required Materials and Equipment Operates a four-wheel drive vehicle, pick-up truck with or without trailer, 150 HP 18-foot powerboat, two-way radios to communicate by voice to other lake personnel, water rescue equipment, tow ropes, cash register, telephone, mobile phones and first aid equipment. PRE-EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS Candidates must be legally entitled to work in the United States and must successfully pass a criminal background check, reference check, and substance screen.
