The Job The Department of Public Health (DPH) is recruiting for a Public Health Microbiologist III to perform microbiological, immunological and molecular biology testing on patients' specimens, food, water, and other samples. The position will be assigned to conduct the most difficult and complex testing and analysis including Laboratory Response Network (LRN) methods; work on special projects or studies; be responsible for maintaining/updating quality assurance records; participate in the training and assessment of laboratory staff; and serve as a lead over other laboratory personnel. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Working Conditions: Employees are subject to On-Call duties to accept samples and perform urgent lab testing. Background Investigation: Applicants must pass a background investigation, which includes fingerprinting and/or credit check, prior to appointment. Minimum Requirements Applicants must meet all of the following certification and education/experience requirements: Certification: Must possess a valid Public Health Microbiologist (PHM) Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Applicants must provide the certificate number to their California PHM Certificate, or the application will be disqualified. -AND- Education/Experience: Applicants must meet one of the following education and experience options: Option 1: A Bachelor's degree in Biological Science or other related field of study, - and- four (4) years (full-time equivalent) of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing in a state or local government Public Health laboratory or clinical laboratory. -OR- Option 2: A Master's degree in Biological Science or other related field of study, -and- two (2) years (full-time equivalent) of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing in a state or local government Public Health laboratory or clinical laboratory. -OR- Option 3: A Doctoral degree in Biological Science or other related field of study, -and- one (1) year (full-time equivalent) of laboratory training or experience performing high complexity testing in a state or local government Public Health laboratory or clinical laboratory. Desired Qualifications The following qualifications are highly desirable: Familiarity with the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act of 1988 (CLIA). Practical experience in both Molecular Biology and conventional laboratory techniques in Bacteriology, Mycology, Virology, Parasitology, and Mycobacteriology. Practical experience preparing and presenting technical material in small groups using computer aids. Experience training and overseeing the work of professional and support staff. Experience validating new test procedures, preparing written test procedures manuals, and assessing staff competency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer experience using Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Laboratory Information Management Systems. Selection Process There will be a competitive evaluation of qualifications based on a review of the application and supplemental questionnaire.
