About Our Job The City and County of Denver's Municipal Public Defender Office is looking for Pre-Law Interns for fall of 2020. Our primary focus is to provide comprehensive legal representation to defendants who face jail time for violating municipal ordinances and traffic offenses in the Denver County Court System. Our office has been in operation since January 1, 2015 and is overseen by the City's Chief Municipal Public Defender. The creation of this office ensures that the City and County of Denver is on the same level with other progressive municipalities providing quality in-house Public Defense services for indigent citizens. The Office of the Municipal Public Defender provides same level representation with progressive municipalities and state systems. As a Pre-Law student intern, you will assist the office with the daily operation of the office. Attention to detail and ability to follow instructions is imperative. As an intern, you will have the opportunity to experience: Must be highly motivated to help indigent people charged with crimes and willing to assist in the overall defense of clients Ability to work with attorney, paralegals, and other staff while following instructions Provide support to attorneys as needed during court appearances including arraignments and trials Gain familiarity of procedure in both criminal and traffic cases Transcribe audio and video files in the discovery Basic research in order to draft motions and documents Open and close client files and maintain current database information Operate computers and standard office equipment including commonly used computer software programs Maintain regular and acceptable attendance as determined by supervisor Public Defender internship and duties will depend upon the level of experience and whether the candidate qualifies under the Student Practice Act.
