The Position About this position : Portland Parks & Recreation (PP&R) seeks to fill a Botanic Specialist 1 - Natural Resources Youth & Community (NRYC) Program Specialty position that supports Portland Parks & Recreation's City Nature East Natural Areas unit. This Community Stewardship Coordinator position will be responsible for developing and implementing culturally inclusive environmental education and community stewardship programming in PP&R natural areas, parks, and trails. This position will engage and partner closely with a wide variety of community-led/nonprofit organizations, school groups, Friends groups, culturally specific groups, religious organizations, businesses, the public, etc. Focus is to provide high-quality volunteer experiences while also advancing the work of City Nature East to improve overall ecological health of Natural Areas on the eastside of Portland. The position will implement bureau-wide diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by applying an equity lens to all aspects of the work and partnerships. Successful candidates will be able to communicate effectively via email, phone, and in person with people of all ages, races, beliefs, sexual orientations, health, personality temperaments, cultural backgrounds, and life circumstances. Candidate must have the ability to clearly and engagingly present information to small and large groups and have demonstrated experience in community relationship building, working with diverse groups of people, as well as a background in natural resources. As a Stewardship Coordinator you will: Partner with and outreach to community-based organizations and other partners to increase access to nature and nature-based experiences for Portlanders of all ages and backgrounds. Plan and lead habitat enhancement stewardship events and projects including installing and caring for native plants; removal of invasive plants; basic trail work; litter clean ups; and other habitat enhancement and/or community science projects Partner with internal and external programs and organizations to provide environmental education programming for school groups, community-based organizations and internal PP&R programs such as the Youth Conservation Crew. Answer questions and concerns from the public, providing strong customer service and a solutions-oriented approach. Apply Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion principles and practices, as well as an equity lens, to collaborate with partners to provide culturally appropriate stewardship experiences to under-served communities on Portland's Eastside, focusing on Black, Indigenous and other communities of color or immigrant and refugee communities who have been under-represented in land management careers and volunteerism. To Qualify Applicants must specifically address and demonstrate in their supplemental question responses and resume how their education, training and/or experience, meets each of the following minimum qualifications: Knowledge and experience applying methods and techniques of volunteer/group coordination and community involvement including planning, leading, reporting and using effective and timely communication (in-person, phone and email) on conservation-based events. Experience establishing and maintaining working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. For example, culturally specific and under-represented communities, all levels of staff, staff of other agencies and organizations, business leaders, teachers, and others encountered in the course of work. Knowledge of and experience with watershed health, habitat improvement, and plant ecology, including techniques for presenting this information during a stewardship project to a diverse range of communities, ages, and socio-economic groups. Experience planning, coordinating, and implementing basic habitat improvement projects including choosing, installing, and maintaining native plants; appropriate methods of removing and disposing of non-native nuisance plants; litter clean ups; community science and wildlife survey projects; etc. Ability and experience developing and producing programmatic written materials--online and hard copy--using computer software such as word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs. Ability to collect and keep accurate and detailed records, create and manage dynamic schedules and calendars, and produce a variety of reports, partnership agreements, and other documents.
