Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include: Fingerprinting (if over 18 at time of hire) Criminal Background screening for the past 7 years (if over 18 at time of hire) Drug Screening Lifeguards/Cashiers must be at least 15 years of age at time of hire. Instructors must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire. This recruitment process will be used to fill part-time positions at all four aquatic centers as needed. The Position: Under general supervision, Ocean Lifeguards patrol beaches with the overall goal of providing protection to life, limb and property. Ocean Lifeguards guard an area of beach from an assigned station, patrol a section of the beach, participate in marine and other related emergencies, and make rescues and prevent marine accidents. IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION: Mandatory swim testing will be conducted at the Main Beach White Tower on Saturday, March 20, 2021. All applications must MUST be submitted by Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 11:59 PM (PST) in order to be considered for participation in the testing process. Testing Day Details: Candidates will be invited to schedule a check-in time through their government jobs account. Attendance at testing is required in order to be considered. JOB SUMMARY: Under general supervision, the position assists in supervising and conducting the daily operation of the City aquatics program site including the assistance in the planning and monitoring of aquatic classes and programs; and assists in the training and supervising of pool employees. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS: An incumbent in this classification assists in teaching of specific techniques to participants in the aquatics program; assists in required pre-testing programs to divide participants into classes, divisions, or ability groups; provides for safe and enjoyable program activities; completes required department paperwork; and sets up equipment. Work is closely supervised and reviewed through regularly scheduled conferences, reports, and evaluations.   This is a part-time position, working throughout the year.  Work schedules vary as needed.  As a condition of employment, a Senior Lifeguard must be available for all in-service training, annual training dates, and annual fitness performance test. Takes reports from the public; fills out incident reports, training logs and other forms and paperwork as required. Participates in in-service training sessions. Other duties as assigned. Knowledge of municipal rules and regulations related to the use of pool area and communicates the rules and regulation effectively to staff and patrons. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public. Ability to recognize potentially harmful situations and take immediate and appropriate action. Skill in the utilization of effective lifesaving methods. Ability to operate a City vehicle and possess the required license. Tools & Equipment Used: Safety and rescue equipment, small hand tools for minor pool maintenance, phone/walkie - talkie, chemical test kit, pool vacuum, brushes, electric pressure washer, and various pool cleaning materials. Physical Demands: Must be able to see, sit, stoop, kneel, stand, communicate, reach and manipulate objects. Lifeguards must be proficient swimmers and be able to perform proper rescue and first aid techniques. This position also requires the ability to maintain focus for multiple hours at a time in sunny, hot, humid conditions.
