JOB POSTING LOS ANGELES COUNTY SANITATION DISTRICTS Invites applications for the position of: ELECTRICAL PROJECT DESIGNER POSTING #SB-125-20E The Sanitation Districts are a non-civil services public agency with over 1,700 employees. Joint Administration Office, Whittier LOCATION: ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT, ELECTRICAL & INSTRUMENTATION DESIGN SECTION, JOINT ADMINISTRATION OFFICE ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: To perform advanced design layout, complex drafting and initial concept design; provide technical assistance and coordinate the work of designers, drafting technicians and drafting consultants to facilitate the completion of electrical design projects. JOB SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of a Supervising Designer, and technical direction from a Supervising Designer or Project Engineer, the incumbent performs complete 3D design layout of complex electrical systems involving drawing preparation from initial concept design to final drawings; prepares contract drawings, plans and specifications for capital construction and maintenance projects; provides technical guidance to and coordinates the work of designers, drafting technicians and drafting consultants on a project basis; checks electrical engineering drawings and specifications and makes material take-offs and cost estimates; makes field investigations; makes electrical calculations; establishes and maintains electrical drafting standards; performs drafting duties involving electrical plans, cross-sections, and electrical diagrams; and performs related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Candidates must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License; - AND - Option A: three years of experience performing duties equivalent to a Designer I, II; - OR - Option B: seven years of experience performing design and drafting work. A bachelor's degree in Industrial Technology with emphasis in drafting and design from an accredited college or university may be substituted for four of the seven years of required experience. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: The ideal candidate will have ten years of experience performing duties equivalent to a principal electrical designer or equivalent title, more than 5 years experience with the design and development of electrical plans for wastewater, power generation, petrochemical, or heavy industrial facilities projects for public agencies, and at least 5 years working knowledge and practical application experience with the National Electrical Code (NEC) to include but not be limited to the following: Conduit fill and branch circuit sizing Motor Load Calculations Grounding Conductor Sizing EXAMPLES OF ASSESSMENT CRITERIA The competitive selection process may cover a knowledge of: the principles of electrical design; contract administration; techniques, methods and equipment used in specialized electrical design layout work; construction materials; electrical systems; engineering mathematics; material take-offs and cost estimates; and microstation computer aided drafting systems. The ability to: utilize computer aided drafting systems and manual equipment to design and layout electrical plans from conceptualization to final stage; perform complex electrical drafting design; perform complex mathematical calculations for specialized electrical design; coordinate the work of drafting technicians, designers, and drafting consultants to meet established deadlines; analyze field engineering data and make technical recommendations; translate verbal ideas and sketches into completed electrical plans and contract drawings. SELECTION PROCESS: Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires will be reviewed and evaluated for relevant experience and/or coursework. Candidates considered to have the best qualifications will be invited to the written examination. The selection process will consist of a written test weighted at 40%, and an interview weighted at 60%. Candidates must receive a qualifying score on each selection component to move forward in the selection process. NOTE: Prior to appointment, a thorough reference check will be conducted. The recommended candidate must undergo a job related pre-employment physical, which includes a drug and alcohol test. Candidates are also subject to a review of their DMV records for moving violations, chargeable accidents or more serious charges.
