College of the Arts School of Art The Art Education Program in the School of Art at California State University, Long Beach is amongst the premier art educator preparation programs in the state, preparing art teachers to teach through a social justice lens and promote equity and excellence in art education in the state’s public-school systems. The School of Art is dedicated to its mission of creating a comprehensive art school experience within the context of a large publicly funded state university. At the undergraduate level, we provide a diverse population of over 1,900 aspiring artists, art historians and art teachers with access to affordable, quality education combining a broad-based liberal arts collegiate experience with a firm historical, theoretical, and foundational art curriculum. At the graduate level, our degree programs are designed with a dual emphasis on tailoring programs of study to individual students while fostering shared experience among a community of graduate students. Our faculty is committed to the belief that an education in the visual arts and related scholarship can be grounded in tradition while geared toward innovation; can foster both discipline-centered and interdisciplinary activity and discourse; and can achieve a fusion of informed dialogue, practice, and production. Required Qualifications: Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Art Education or Education with a related focus. Degree at time of application or official notification of completion of the terminal degree by August 1, 2023. Demonstrated potential to teach undergraduate courses in art education Demonstrated commitment to preparing future teachers in Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to work in diverse K-12 urban classrooms Demonstrated teaching experience(s) at the K-12 level Demonstrated commitment to mentoring and working effectively with first-generation and underrepresented undergraduate students Demonstrated potential for research, scholarly and creative activities in art education or related fields. Demonstrated understanding of California teaching credential Demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population Preferred Qualifications: Expertise in Art Education Curriculum and Instruction in teacher preparation Familiarity with the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) requirements for the Single Subject Art Education Credential At least three years of demonstrated successful K-12 public school teaching in ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse urban settings Demonstrate ability to advance the program’s mission to prepare diverse educators who promote social justice, and can meet the needs of students in ethnically, culturally, and linguistically diverse urban schools. Experience in teaching undergraduate and/or post-baccalaureate courses at the college level An earned K-12 public school teaching credential A record of peer reviewed publications, conference presentations and/or creative activities Duties: Teach credential courses, undergraduate, and graduate/post-baccalaureate including courses in Art Education. [Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online, and/or any combination thereof.] Maintain up-to-date knowledge of state requirements for Single Subject Art Teaching Credential, and inform School of Art Director, Undergraduate Advising and Art Education faculty teaching Single Subject Art courses of all changes in the credential program Work with area school district and public-school professionals to coordinate placement of art student teachers and assign supervisors Develop and maintain an active research, scholarly, and creative activities agenda in art education or related fields leading to presentations and publications Actively engage in program-related service activities such as curriculum design, cross-departmental, college collaborative projects, and student engagement activities Participate in service and faculty governance through department, college, and university committees.
