Graduation Assistance Counselor - 2020-21 school year only

Tacoma Public Schools Expected Start Date: February 2021 FTE: 1.0 Hours per day: 7.5 Salary Level: Based on preparation level and experience per TEA Collective Bargaining Agreement Union/Days per year: Teacher, 180 work days, 10 month Benefits: This job has the full range of benefits offered by Tacoma Public Schools. Additional Information: This position is for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year only. Summary: This position will focus on the academic and support needs of students who are at risk of not graduating with their class. The specialist will work under the direction of the high school principal to identify students who do not meet state standards in one or more areas and/or are not accumulating credits at a rate that would assure on-time graduation. Responsibilities: 1. Assures that students are enrolled in appropriate courses to meet high school graduation requirements. 2. Assists staff in the development and management of Student Learning Plans. 3. Assists in the development and coordination of interventions for students not meeting State standards in reading, writing, math, and science. 4. Manages the administration of the HSPE/COE. 5. Manages the processes related to alternative CAA options to meet standards, including Collection of Evidence, Scholastic Aptitude Tests, AP exams, Comparative performance, or other alternative assessments. 6. Serves as a resource to instructional staff regarding interventions to foster academic achievement. 7. Works with teachers, students, and parents to address individual student needs regarding dropout prevention/retrieval and credit retrieval; provides referrals to district and community resources. 8. Assists in the identification of students for summer school or other interventions and HSPE/COE retakes. 9. Works with incoming at-risk students to assure a smooth transition 10. Assists in the planning and organization of field trips for student enrichment. OTHER JOB DUTIES 1. Maintains certification; maintains and updates knowledge and skills necessary for success in the position by participating in professional development activities as needed or as assigned. 2. Performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Other information: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience Bachelor's degree in education and three years successful classroom or counseling experience in a K-12 school system, master's degree desired; or any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of culturally responsive practices for student success. Knowledge of high school graduation requirements, alternative options for graduation, and post-high school opportunities. Knowledge of effective mentoring strategies. Skill in obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information. Skill in leadership and facilitating change. Skill in effective use of technology to support learning for understanding. Ability to communicate and establish trusting relationships with students, teachers, and families. Ability to develop, facilitate and assess tailored professional development in assessment and working with at-risk students. Ability to effectively demonstrate culturally competent and culturally responsive interventions and practices to promote student success. Ability to plan and manage programs effectively, with attention to detail. Ability to recognize and provide interventions according to individual students' needs and abilities. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of people in a multi-cultural, diverse socio-economic setting. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional relationships. Licenses/Special Requirements Valid/current Washington State teaching or ESA/Counselor certificate.
