About the Department: The main task of the Coroner's Office is to determine both the medical and legal causes for deaths in York County with priority focused on sudden, suspicious as well as deaths that occur for no apparent reason. The Coroner is a County official whom is elected to serve a 4-year term. The Coroner, an elected constitutional officer, has jurisdiction over all deaths investigated by their office. Generally, the Coroner is responsible for investigating all suspicious and violent deaths, as well as all deaths that occur outside of a hospital or nursing home. In addition to the aforementioned scenarios, the Coroner and Coroner's office are also responsible for investigation of all deaths that occur less than 24 hours after patients are admitted to the hospital as well as all emergency room deaths. About our opportunityThe York County Coroner's Office is excited to hire an exempt Deputy Coroner to join their team! The purpose of this position is to investigate all deaths in the County, to include natural, accidental, suicide, and homicide deaths, and determine a cause and manner of death.
Projected Salary Range/Pay Grade 115: $51,568.12 - $61,881.74 per year. Salary is determined based on experience and/or education.

Duties and Responsibilities: - Operates a vehicle and drives to the location of a death and thoroughly examines the body for wounds, injuries, or other trauma as well as signs of foul play.
- Photographs the body and documents anything that is seen.
- Interviews those on scene to discuss events leading up to the death as well as any medical issues.
- If family is unavailable, the coroner locates information to notify family members.
- Coordinates with other agencies such as a forensics unit, law enforcement, highway patrol, EMS, and the fire departments to manage the scene.
- Collects, logs, and stores personal effects found on the body into evidence in the Coroner’s Office.
- Schedules and attends autopsies and requests toxicology on all necessary decedents.
- Communicates results of toxicology and other reports to the deceased’s family.
- Determines cause and manner of death.
About you Experience and Education: - High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Three (3) years investigating causes of death or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Certifications and Licenses: - Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI), is a requirement after one year of employment.

Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

Longevity AllowanceFull-time regular county employees, elected officials, appointed officials, and judges with ten or more years of full time continuous governmental service are eligible to receive a monthly longevity allowance in addition to their regular compensation. Continuous service transferred from employment with another county, municipality, state or a political entity created by the State may contribute toward eligibility for the longevity allowance. Longevity allowances are paid according to the following schedule.

Employees in their new hire six (6) month probationary period shall not be able to use annual leave until they become regular county employees. Employees who are separating from county service shall be paid for all accrued, unused annual leave up to 360 hours provided they give York County as the employer the proper notice as required. Employees in their six (6) month New Hire probationary period who are terminated or separated from employment shall not be paid for accrued annual leave. The maximum amount of annual leave carried into each calendar year is 360 hours.
Earning Rate for Full-Time EmployeesFull-time employees with less than ten years of continuous service earn at the rate of eight hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve months period. Full-time employees with at least ten years, but less than twenty years of continuous service will earn at the rate of ten (10) hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve month period. Full-time employees with twenty or more years of service will earn at the rate of twelve (12) hours of paid annual leave for each month of service during a twelve (12) months period.
Sick LeaveFull-time county employees may be entitled to earn sick leave with pay. Employees may accrue up to 1,440 hours of sick leave. Upon termination of employment with the County, employees may not be reimbursed for any unused sick leave. When a paid holiday occurs while an employee is on sick leave with pay, the day may not be charged as sick leave.
Earning Rate of Sick LeaveFull time employees will earn eight hours of sick leave per month of service during a twelve month period.

Training:Quality training and educational programs are available at various times for county employees in order to support workforce development that is consistent with organizational objectives.
