The City of Rockport is looking for a detail-oriented and experienced Building Inspector / Plans Review Examiner to help ensure safe, high-quality development in our growing community.
In this vital role, you’ll conduct inspections, review plans, and collaborate with contractors, architects, and residents to ensure building projects meet local codes and ordinances. If you're passionate about construction standards and community development, we’d love to have you on our team.
What You’ll Do:
- Inspect new and remodeled commercial and residential structures for code compliance.
- Review construction plans, blueprints, and related documents for adherence to city ordinances and safety standards.
- Document inspections, corrections, and communications with contractors and property owners.
- Respond to public complaints and provide guidance on code compliance.
- Issue correction notices, communicate violations, and support corrective actions.
- Assist with floodplain management responsibilities.
- Help at the permit desk and participate in board meetings or hearings as needed.
What You’ll Bring to the Team:
- Thorough understanding of building codes, zoning ordinances, and construction methods.
- Knowledge of inspection tools, techniques, and code enforcement procedures.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and technical documents.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- A problem-solving mindset with attention to detail.
- Confidence working both independently and as part of a team.
Work Environment & Physical Demands:
- Work is split between office duties and on-site inspections, including outdoor work in all weather conditions.
- Requires bending, stooping, climbing ladders, and lifting light to heavy materials.
- May involve exposure to construction environments, noise, and dust.
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) must be worn as needed.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, with specialized training in construction technology preferred.
- 1–2 years of relevant experience in building inspection or construction.
- Valid Texas driver’s license.
- State certification (or ability to obtain) for relevant inspection types.
- Valid plumbing inspector license from the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- Certification through a recognized code organization (ICC preferred) in at least one of the following:
- Building Inspector
- One- and Two-Family Dwelling Inspector
- Residential Combination Inspector
