DescriptionThe Modesto Irrigation District is currently recruiting to fill four full-time regular positions, under to perform various construction and maintenance work on substation and related equipment.
Any Qualified Individual may apply. This is a non-exempt position and is allocated to the Utility Services and Maintenance Bargaining Unit. The list established as a result of this recruitment may be used to fill other Electrician Substation/Apprentice vacancies that may occur in the District through July 7, 2026.
If there is a lack of qualified candidates at the Journey Substation Electrician level the position may be filled at the Apprentice Substation Electrician level, and the incumbent's training and advancement will be governed by the District's Apprentice Training Program. Successful candidates for Apprentice Substation Electrician position will be required to sign an Apprentice Agreement prior to beginning the Apprentice Training Program. Copies of the Apprentice Training Program and Apprentice Agreement are available in the Human Resources Department for review.
Examples of DutiesDuties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Perform construction and maintenance work on electric generation, transmission and distribution equipment including high and low voltage substation facilities
- Load, transport and unload materials, tools and equipment
- Climb station structures
- Operate aerial lift, digger/derrick, cable pulling, welding, hot washing, oil filtering, trenching and bending equipment
- Inspect assigned vehicles and equipment to insure safe working conditions and perform minor maintenance when required; observe District Safety Rules
- perform overtime and/or emergency work
- Electricians are normally assigned to work as a member of a crew, but may be assigned to work alone.

Typical QualificationsAny combination of education, experience, knowledge and abilities may satisfy the necessary minimum qualifications. A typical way to obtain the education, experience, knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Successful completion of the District's Apprenticeship Program or equivalent program from an electric utility for Substation Electricians is required for the Journey Electrician level. No experience necessary to enter the Apprentice Electrician Program.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of electrical principles, materials, methods, tools and equipment used in the installation, removal, and maintenance of electrical facilities; terminology and mathematics associated with department functions; basic electrical and mechanical theory; District Safety Rules; department policies and procedures.
- Ability to observe District Safety Rules; perform heavy physical work; climb substation structures, work at heights in excess of 120 feet; work as a crew member or alone; communicate clearly and work cooperatively with District employees; follow oral and written instructions.
Special Requirements: Must have a valid California Class C driver license and attainment of a valid California Class A driver license within six (6) months of appointment to this position and maintained thereafter.Attainment of crane certification is required subject to management discretion and must be maintained thereafter.
Residency: Residence within a 35-mile radius of the District's Service Center (929 Woodland Ave., Modesto, CA) must be established within six (6) months of appointment to this position and maintained thereafter.
Apprentice Agreement: The Apprentice position will be required to sign an Apprentice Agreement prior to beginning work.
