Primary responsibilities include the installation and maintenance of traffic signs, pavement markings, and providing traffic control support for citywide events and projects. This position plays a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient movement of vehicles and pedestrians throughout the city.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Installs, replaces, and maintains traffic signs in accordance with MUTCD standards.
- Applies and maintains pavement markings including striping, arrows, symbols, and crosswalks.
- Set up and removes traffic control devices such as cones, barricades, signage, and message boards for special events, road closures, and emergency situations.
- Assists with traffic signal maintenance support as directed by signal technicians.
- Operates various light-duty vehicles and equipment including paint machines, trailers, and trucks.
- Loads, transport, and unloads materials and supplies related to sign and marking installation.
- Performs general cleaning, maintenance, and organization of the traffic shop and work sites.
- Participates in special event setup and breakdown activities in coordination with other City departments.
- Reads and interprets basic maps, work orders, and construction plans to ensure proper installation locations.
- Supports the relationship between the City of Galveston and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; maintains confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.
- Employees may at any time be required to work in order to provide for the safety and well-being of the general public, including the delivery and restoration of vital services, in the event of an emergency.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS: Knowledge:- City organization, operations, policies, and procedures.
- City of Galveston policies, procedures, and safety standards.
- MUTCD (Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices) guidelines.
- Traffic control methods, equipment, and signage.
- Pavement marking and roadway painting operations.
- Basic construction and maintenance practices.
- Safe operation of hand tools and light-duty power equipment.
- Basic computer and mobile device functions for work orders and timekeeping.
- Business and personal computers, and spreadsheet software applications.
Skill in:- Installing, maintaining, and removing traffic signs and markings accurately and efficiently.
- Setting up effective traffic control zones for events and work sites.
- Operating equipment such as paint stripers, post drivers, and power tools.
- Following written and verbal instructions, maps, and plans.
- Working cooperatively with crew members and other departments.
- Communicating clearly and respectfully with the public and coworkers.
- Working independently and taking initiative in field operations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:High School diploma or equivalent; AND one year of experience in traffic operations, public works maintenance, or construction; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION: - Possession of a valid Texas Driver’s License.
- Work zone or flagger certification preferred or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Work is performed primarily in an outdoor work environment. May be exposed to extreme weather conditions. May be required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Compensation Range$35,773-$53,660
