    Duties Description

    The Park Worker 3, SG-9, position is assigned to Marine Services Bureau, Albany Office, and is physically located at Sampson State Park, Finger Lakes State Park Region, Romulus, New York. This position reports to the Park Supervisor 1 (Marine) and performs the following duties:

    • Functions as second in command of the Navigation Aid Crew and supervises lower-level staff such as seasonal employees
    • Assists with and manages various aspects of the maintenance and operation for one of the two work boats assigned to the Navigation Aids Unit
    • Performs a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair activities and ensures Park Supervisor 1 is aware of any problems.
    • Manages vessel operations including placement, removal and maintenance of buoys as scheduled
    • Repairs and sanitizes buoys and ensure batteries and lights are working
    • Performs and supervises crew in marking channels and obstructions on New York State waterways
    • Maintains inventory of maintenance and repair supplies and reorders supplies as needed
    • Trains seasonal staff on U.S. Coast Guard and agency safety requirements for use of equipment and operation of vehicles and continually monitors compliance with safety rules
    • Operates motor vehicles and trailers to transport vessels used to place and remove bouys
    • Assists with the maintenance and repair of boat trailers, checking lights, bunks, rollers, brake systems, wiring, wheel bearings and fenders.
    • Keep all assigned storage areas and vehicles organized and free of debris.
    • Respond to inquiries and complaints from park patrons.

    Minimum Qualifications

    One year of experience* in the operation and / or maintenance of a park, historic site, golf course, or recreational facility.

    In addition to operations and maintenance, the following types of experience are also qualifying: law enforcement or security, firefighting, environmental education, environmental stewardship, natural resource management, forest management, wildlife management or preservation, or historic preservation or interpretation; OR

    One year of military service in any of the military branches; OR

    An Associate’s or higher-level degree, or 60 credit hours of college level coursework; OR

    Completion of an appropriate two-year technical / trades school program or two years' experience as a trades assistant under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson.

    Additional Comments

    OPERATIONAL NEEDS:
    • Must be able to operate a motorized boat
    • Must be able to operate a truck and boat trailer
    • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license that allows the candidate to legally operate a motor vehicle in New York State as a term and condition of employment.
