PARKS SUPERINTENDENTDepartment: Parks and RecreationPay Grade: 111FLSA Status: ExemptPersonnel Status: Regular Full-Time JOB SUMMARY This position is responsible for managing the Parks and Recreation Department’s parks division. This position reports to the Parks and Facilities Administrator.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS - Performs landscape management duties.
- Performs tree management duties.
- Investigates and resolves citizen complaints.
- Assists in the budgeting and planning for maintenance, operations, and construction of parks.
- Exercises direct supervision over assigned personnel. Plans, schedules, assigns, and evaluates parks maintenance staff and crew performance.
- Performs other related job duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; three (3) years’ experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Qualifications: - Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. Requirement exists at the time of hire and as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscaping architecture, including site analysis, conceptual design, grading, drainage and irrigation, construction, and planting.
- Knowledge of urban forestry and horticulture, including plant identification/physiology/pathology.
- Knowledge of irrigation design and installation.
- Knowledge of basic building maintenance tools and techniques.
- Knowledge of the principles and procedures of herbicide, pesticide, and fertilizer applications.
- Knowledge of park and playground maintenance.
- Knowledge of trail construction and maintenance.
- Knowledge of department and safety rules and regulations.
- Knowledge of local government operations, policies and plans, and modern office practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other similar programs.
- Skill in the application of chemical pesticides and fertilizers.
- Skill in operating various hand and power tools.
- Skill in operating a tractor, push mower, and trimmer.
- Skill in the training and supervision of personnel.

- Skill in the use of small office equipment, including calculators, copy machines or multi-line telephone systems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The work is heavy work, which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, or walking. The employee uses tools or equipment requiring manual dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed in various outdoor environments. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, irritating chemicals, and occasional cold, hot, or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
