Environmental Officer

Full-time position available with the Neighborhoods and Community Services Department, Dangerous Buildings Division, located at 414 E 12th St.
Starting Salary: $24.77/Hr
Normal Work Days/Hours: Monday-Friday 8:00a.m.-5:00p.m. with telework schedule available after completion of 6 month probationary period, with manager approval.

Responsibilities

This position will provide oversight of the demolition process of residential and commercial buildings by contractors to ensure regulatory compliance and environmental protection.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Monitors the demolition process of structures that contain asbestos and lead for air emissions and other environmental issues.
• Ensures the safety of the worksite.
• Identifies hazardous materials and ensuring proper handling and waste disposal.
• Responds to inquiries from the public and coordinates relevant activities between departments and contractors which arise in the course of the City's business.
• Conducts asbestos and/or lead paint inspections of buildings as necessary and may be responsible for coordinating and managing abatement activities.
• Other duties include coordinating and assisting with hazardous materials management activities at City facilities, performing environmental site assessments, and advising internal clients on environmental issues.

Work will be performed in the office and in the field. Work assignments afford limited opportunity for independent judgment in planning work, coordinating project teams, and making technical decisions. Knowledge of air, water, asbestos, and hazardous waste regulations is preferred. A background in construction safety is helpful.


Qualifications

REQUIRES an accredited Bachelor's degree in an environmentally related field, such as environmental science and related physical and life sciences, environmental engineering and related engineering specializations, environmental law and related legal specializations or environmental studies and related management, environmental planning and related urban planning specializations, environmental education, environmental policy, sustainability, and public administration specializations; OR an equivalent combination of qualifying education and experience. Must possess of a valid state-issued drivers license in accordance with City of KCMO policies. May be required to pass a pre-employment drug screen.

Successful completion of a pre-employment criminal history/background check is required for all positions. Some positions require a post offer drug screen and/or physical.

If appointed, non-residents must obtain residency inside Kansas City, Missouri's city limits within nine months.
