    DUTIES

    ANNUAL SALARY

    $95,797 to $112,710 and $107,886 to $126,971

    The salary in the Department of Water and Power is $101,831 to $126,511 and $115,758 to $143,821.

    Candidates from the eligible list are normally appointed to vacancies in the lower pay grade positions.Annual salary is at the start of the pay range. The current salary range is subject to change.     A Safety Engineering Associate assists in administering a program for employee safety and accident prevention for a City department or several departments.

    REQUIREMENT(S)/MINIMUM QUALIFICATION(S)

    Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in environmental and occupational health science, occupational safety, safety engineering or an allied field; or Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university and two years of full-time paid professional experience applying health and safety standards and regulations pertaining to workplace settings, including experience with conducting safety audits and inspections, and the development of safety programs and training.

    PROCESS NOTES

    Applicants who lack six months or less of the required experience, or 6 semester units or 9 quarter units or less of the educational requirement at the time of filing, may file for this examination. However, they cannot be appointed until the full experience or educational requirement is met.A valid Class C driver’s license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is required at the time of appointment. Candidates will not be eligible for appointment if their DMV record within the last 36 months reflects three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents, or a conviction of a major moving violation such as DUI.Applicants must list their school name and location, type of degree earned and major in the Education Section of the on-line application. Applicants who fail to provide this information on their application will not be considered further in this examination and their applications will not be processed.For qualifying work experience, the term “professional experience” applies to positions that require possession of a degree from an accredited four-year college or university in order to obtain that position. Therefore, to be considered “professional,” qualifying experience must be gained in positions requiring a four-year degree.Please note that qualifying education must be from a school accredited by a City of Los Angeles recognized agency. A list of approved accrediting agencies can be found at http://personnel.lacity.gov/Accredited%20Institutions%2008-21-08.pdf .Candidates completing the examination process may be contacted by the Personnel Department to provide required proof of qualifying degree. Applicants who wish to expedite this process may attach a copy of their qualifying degree or transcripts to their on-line application at the time of filing in the Attachments section.Upon appointment, a Safety Engineering Associate may be required to furnish an automobile, properly insured, for use in City service. Mileage will be paid according to established rates. Some positions may require the use of a respirator, self-contained breathing apparatus or other safety devices in hazardous environments.Some positions may require working in confined spaces or other hazardous circumstances.

    SELECTIVE CERTIFICATION

    In accordance with Charter Section 1010 (b) and Civil Service Rule 5.31, selective certification will be used for some positions that require special skills and/or training. Only persons possessing the following at the time of filing may be considered for appointment to fill such positions.

    A valid Occupational Therapist license issued by the California Board of Occupational Therapy

    NOTE :

    In accordance with Civil Service Rule 4.2, all applicants who apply may not be tested in this examination. To meet anticipated hiring needs, only a limited number of qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the selection process in the following order: 1) Applicants currently employed by the City of Los Angeles who meet the minimum requirements, or are on a reserve list; 2) Remaining applicants who meet the minimum requirements in sufficient numbers to meet hiring needs based on a random sampling of those qualified candidates. Applications submitted during the filing period may be kept on file in the event that additional applicants need to be tested to meet hiring needs.

    SELECTION PROCESS

    The examination will consist entirely of an evaluation of professional and personal qualifications by interview. In the interview, the following competencies may be evaluated: Judgment and Decision Making; Analytical Ability; Interpersonal Skills; Teamwork; Oral Communication; Written Communication; Shares Knowledge and Information; Safety Focus, including knowledge of: principles and practices of safety engineering; safety hazards in construction, operation, maintenance work or other types of jobs, and the methods used to prevent, identify and/or address them; applicable accident prevention techniques and devices; applicable Federal, State, and local laws, regulations, and standards related to employee safety and accident prevention; various types of safety and accident prevention programs, and the methods used to prioritize their implementation; principles, methods and techniques used to conduct employee safety training; and other necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Prior to the interview, candidates will be required to prepare some written material related to the duties and responsibilities of a Safety Engineering Associate. This essay material will not be separately scored, but will be presented to the interview board for review and consideration, which may include discussion, in the overall evaluation of the candidate. Those who do not complete the advisory essay will not be invited to the interview and will be considered to have failed the entire examination. To be considered complete, the advisory essay must include a substantive response for each question or problem included in the advisory essay for which a candidate is required to provide an answer. Please note that candidates must complete the advisory essay and meet the minimum qualifications as stated on this bulletin in order to be considered further in the examination process.

    The advisory essay will be administered on-line . Candidates invited to participate in the examination will receive an e-mail from the City of Los Angeles outlining the specific steps needed to complete the on-line advisory essay. Candidates will be required to complete the on-line advisory essay between MONDAY, AUGUST 4, 2025 and MONDAY, AUGUST 11, 2025. Candidates who fail to complete the advisory essay as instructed may be disqualified.

    Candidates will be notified later by e-mail of the date, time, and location of the interview, which may be held in Los Angeles or on-line. It is anticipated that interviews will begin during the period of TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2025 to FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2025.
