Breastfeeding Peer Counselor!
Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is a special supplemental nutrition program in Wake County, funded by the USDA. We provide individualized nutrition counseling, group education, nutritious foods, breastfeeding support, and referrals for health care and other services to income-eligible women, infants, and children up to age 5.
As the
Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BFPC) you'll provide breastfeeding education, support and encouragement to prenatal and postpartum WIC clients. You'll also serve as a role model and support person for pregnant women and new mothers to manage common breastfeeding challenges. Other responsibilities of the BFPC include making breastfeeding support appointments and integrating services into the clinic flow, consulting with WIC Lactation Consultants, breastfeeding coordinators and other staff as needed, documenting client contacts and providing monthly reports.
The BFPC will primarily be assigned to one clinic location, but will make home visits and occasionally may need to travel to other Wake County WIC offices. A NC driver’s license and use of a personal automobile is required. A WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor must successfully complete the NC WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor training which is provided.
Essential Functions include:
- Recruiting prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding WIC clients for Breastfeeding Peer Counseling services
- Maintaining routine contact with an assigned caseload of prenatal and postpartum breastfeeding clients by means of phone calls, clinic contacts, home visits and group classes in order to deliver anticipatory guidance, basic breastfeeding education, as well as encouragement and support for breastfeeding
- Responding to calls on an assigned cell phone as well as on the “WIC Breastfeeding Warm-Line” from pregnant or breastfeeding women who are seeking information, support and/or solutions to problems with breastfeeding
- Collaborating/consulting with the lactation consultants, breastfeeding coordinators and other WIC staff as appropriate to provide participants with timely information to resolve problems with breastfeeding and/or WIC Program participation
- Making appropriate referrals according to established protocols in order to avoid breastfeeding complications
- Documenting client contacts and contracts in the North Carolina WIC Crossroads electronic medical record and in the client contact spreadsheet, as well as documenting all equipment issued to the client in the inventory system according to Wake County WIC requirements.
- Providing monthly reports required by the NC WIC and Wake County WIC Programs
Work sites include: Wake Forest and Public Health Center in Raleigh and any of the regional centers including, Zebulon, Fuquay-Varina, and Departure Human Services Center, Cary and any new site.
Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30am-5:15pm, 1 evening per week until 7:00 PM, & 1 Sat per month 8:30-2:00 to make 40 hours per week

The Basics (Required Education and Experience) - High school diploma or GED
- No specific experience required
- Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience) - English and Spanish language fluency strongly preferred
- WIC program knowledge/experience
- Must be able to successfully complete the provided NC WIC breastfeeding Peer Counselor Training
- Knowledge of NC WIC Crossroads system
