The Marin County Department of Finance is responsible for the powers and duties of the offices of the auditor, controller, tax collector, treasurer, and public administrator. We serve as a collaborative partner and fiscal advisor to the County government in their consideration of fiscal decisions and planning. ABOUT THE POSITIONThere is currently one (1) Accountant II position with the Fiscal Administrative Services Division. This position is located on-site reporting to the Marin County Civic Center building in San Rafael, CA. A flexible hybrid schedule may be available after successfully completing the probationary period.The Fiscal Administrative Services Division is seeking a skilled and motivated Accountant II to join its dedicated team of fiscal experts within a centralized government environment. This vital role involves performing advanced accounting duties under general supervision, ensuring fiscal integrity, regulatory compliance, and financial transparency across the County.
The Accountant II will play a key role in high-impact initiatives, including leading the collection and analysis of complex financial data for the Countywide Annual Cost Allocation Plan and coordinating consultants to prepare and submit State Mandate (SB90) reimbursement claims. This position also involves reviewing interdepartmental charges and direct billing activities for compliance, reconciling financial reports, and acting as a backup for countywide budget oversight to maintain fiscal control.
The Accountant II will collaborate with internal departments, auditors, and external partners to validate transactions and ensure accounting accuracy, develop and communicate accounting procedures, and provide technical support to non-accounting users. Additionally, the role supports disaster cost recovery efforts by compiling and reconciling financial documentation and processes departmental payables while assisting with the administration of the County travel program.

QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge of:- Accounting theory, principles and practices and their application to a wide variety of accounting transactions.
- Principles, practices and terminology of governmental accounting.
- Principles and practices of budgeting in a public agency.
- Principles and practices of cost accounting in a public agency.
- Computer applications related to the work, including spreadsheets and financial transaction processing and report preparation.
- Applicable laws, codes and regulations.
- Principles of financial auditing and reconciliation.
- Standard office practices and procedures, including the use of standard office equipment.
- Basic functions of a public agency.
Ability to:- Analyze, review, interpret and reconcile financial data, reports and transactions.
- Verify the accuracy of financial transactions and reports.
- Ensure proper authorization and documentation for disbursements and transactions.

Minimum QualificationsPossession of a Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university with at least
12 semester or 18 quarter units in accounting. Relevant professional or technical accounting experience may be substituted for general education on a year-for-year basis, but there is no substitution for the required accounting units . Experience utilizing automated accounting systems and spreadsheets is highly desirable.
In addition to the above, candidates must have
two years of professional accounting experience. Experience in a public agency setting and within the specific area of assignment is highly desirable.
