Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) Facility Assignment Premium : Employees assigned to the CSU will receive a
5% facility assignment premium for all hours worked in the unit. This premium recognizes the critical nature of the work, particularly when directly engaging with individuals in acute psychiatric crises. * Please note that the facility assignment premium is subject to change through the standard labor negotiation process.
Shift Differential Pay : Employees working during evening and night shifts are eligible for additional compensation.
- Evening Zone (2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.): 5% premium of the base hourly rate for each eligible hour worked.
- Night Zone (10:00 p.m. - end of assigned shift): 10% premium of the base hourly rate for each eligible hour worked.
The Registered Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) Counselor is an entry-level, registered position. To qualify for this role, you must possess one of the following valid , current registrations i ssued by the State of California Board of Behavioral Science Examiners:
- Associate Clinical Social Worker
- Associate Marriage and Family Therapist
- Associate Professional Clinical Counselor
- Registered Psychological Assistant
- Registered Psychologist
- Possession of a successor registration or licensure recognized as equivalent by the State of California.

About the Position At the DHS 24/7 Crisis Stabilization Unit , we provide immediate, trauma-informed support to individuals experiencing a mental health or behavioral health crisis. We understand this is deeply human work. That’s why we’re looking for someone who can offer clinical skill, is calm under pressure, and has genuine empathy, especially during the night shifts when care is most crucial.
Under the direct supervision of licensed Behavioral Health staff in the Behavioral Health Division , you will learn to apply clinical skills in a dynamic environment, providing immediate and compassionate care to individuals in psychiatric distress. This position requires flexibility, as the CSU operates around the clock. The primary need is for night shift coverage, including weekends and holidays. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting clinical and risk assessments and gathering collateral information to support informed decision-making
- Writing involuntary psychiatric holds (as needed) and connecting individuals with appropriate services
- Providing counseling and short-term therapeutic services to provide stabilization to individuals and families
- Partnering with law enforcement and other community members in delivering high-quality crisis services
- Coordinating with hospitals and placement resources for psychiatric admissions when needed
- Creating and maintaining accurate and timely clinical documentation
- Providing follow-up care, reassessing clients for discharge, and collaboratively developing safety plans
- Working independently while knowing when to seek consultation from supervisory or clinical leads
The most qualified Registered CSU Counselor candidates are committed and passionate about offering client-centered, recovery-oriented, trauma-informed services. In addition, they will possess many of the following:
- A collaborative spirit and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- The capacity to manage competing priorities and recognize when to seek guidance or support
- Keen attention to detail and high standard of clinical accuracy
- The ability to remain calm, focused, and responsive in high-stress or crises

- Direct experience working with individuals experiencing substance use and/or mental health challenges
- Knowledge of local community-based behavioral health services and supports
- Proficiency with, or a willingness to learn, electronic health records and Microsoft Office applications
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage compassionately and effectively with clients, families, and professional partners
- Well-developed time management, clinical writing, and problem-solving skills
- Bilingual abilities are desired, but not required
