OverviewThe Larimer County Department of Health and Environment (LCDHE) is hiring a full-time Environmental Health Specialist to join our team!
This position will conduct health inspections and investigations of public and private establishments - primarily food service, schools, and child care facilities - to ensure compliance with local and state health and safety regulations. We are looking for someone who is detail-oriented and enjoys interacting with people.

- Conducting onsite inspections of regulated facilities and prepares reports related to the sanitary condition of water supplies, systems, food and drink establishments, institutions, recreation facilities and solid waste streams, or environmental conditions impacting air, water and land that can affect human health due to communicable, zoonotic and chronic disease
- May conduct technical reviews of blueprints, floor plans, and facility plans for compliance with applicable regulations
- Collects required samples
- Recommending corrections and issues compliance orders to address deficiencies and violations; issues or denies related permits
- Providing general and technical information and advice to the public to answer questions and solve problems
- Assisting in coordinating environmental health activities with federal, state, and local governmental agencies
- May participate in various committees and boards related to program activities and responsibilities
- Recommending changes or revisions to departmental policies for compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- May provide supervision of volunteers, students and temporary staff

- Have a general understanding of environmental health principles and practices and the ability to interpret public health needs
- Demonstrate working knowledge and scope of the application of the laws, rules and regulations, ordinances and technical aspects of operations in the programs they are assigned to work in
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with County employees, representatives of other agencies and organizations, and members of the community
- Have good time management skills; be able to multi-task and complete work in a timely manner in a lively work environment
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Identify, analyze and secure corrections of out of compliance situations in accordance with Department policies
- Organize material and present information for educational presentations
- Operate environmental health equipment including sampling, inspection equipment and inspection software
- Perform complex duties independently without close supervision

This position could hire as an Environmental Health Specialist I or II depending on qualifications.
Environmental Health Specialist I
- Bachelor's Degree with 30 hours coursework in basic and natural sciences, required. Basic sciences include life sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, or health sciences.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire, required.
Environmental Health Specialist I I
- Two (2) years as an Environmental Health Specialist I with Larimer County, or comparable experience, required.
- Bachelor's Degree with 30 hours coursework in basic and natural sciences, required. Basic sciences include life sciences, natural sciences, physical sciences, or health sciences.
- Possession of a valid Driver's License by date of hire required.

Supplemental InformationScheduleThe typical schedule for this position is 8am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday with occasional work on nights and weekends. Work may be needed at any of the Department's three offices in Fort Collins, Loveland, or Estes Park.
Please Note The Department of Health and Environment has a vaccine requirement. Successful candidates will be required to comply with the vaccine requirements or request a waiver.
