THE TEAM The purpose of the Business Development Division is to maximize Port of Long Beach revenue opportunities and market share growth by engaging all customer segments, tracking industry trends, analyzing cargo data, identifying new business opportunities, anticipating market direction, and aligning our strategies to market conditions.
This is an unclassified (at-will) position. THE ROLE Under general supervision of the Business Development Manager, the Business Development Analyst assists Business Development Management with a wide variety of administrative responsibilities, including tariff administration, preparation and monitoring of the division’s annual budget; preparation of financial reports; project management; and high-level data analyses and communication of the results.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIESHOW YOU GET TO CONTRIBUTE- Analyze operational statistics and market data, including cargo volume, customer volume, and revenue-enhancing opportunities.
- Coordinate the division’s budget development process; prepare and administer the division’s budgets; organize budget-related meetings; and monitor the division’s expenditures.
- Prepare memorandums and other written reports for the division, including but not limited to summarizing the division’s commercial and business development outreach activities; incentive program performance; develop and maintain standard operating procedures; and communicate statistical data.
- Support the administrative and research functions of Port of Long Beach Tariff No. 4 (Tariff).
- Assist with the administration of the Foreign-Trade Zone (FTZ) 50 Program, including on-boarding new FTZ Operators, review of applications, and invoicing for fees per the FTZ 50 Zone Schedule.
- Deliver commercial presentations, conduct seminars/webinars, and participate in meetings with customers, external vendors, and other stakeholders.
- Assist with the coordination of Business Development Division’s special events, booth/trade show set-up, and other event planning tasks (staffing schedules, sponsorship deliverables, contract oversight, etc.)
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles, assist with project management tasks, grant administration, contract oversight, and other administrative functions for the division.
- Attend business development-related conferences and symposiums that extend the reach of the Port and keep Port Management updated on developments in the industry, applicable regulations, standards, and practices.
- Develop and implement procedures for improving organizational effectiveness.
- Serve as a contributor to the Business Development Division’s marketing plan.
REQUIREMENTS TO FILEEDUCATION- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Public Administration/Policy, International Business, Economics, or a closely related field is required.
- Master’s Degree in the above disciplines or closely related field is desirable.
- Certificate in supply chain logistics, data analytics, or public financial management is desirable.
- Experience offering specific and substantial preparation for the duties of the position may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis; if utilizing this option, this would be four years to substitute for the degree, plus the four years of experience described below, for a total of eight years.
EXPERIENCE - A minimum of four (4) years of progressive experience in the areas of business or public administration, data analytics, project management, and maritime/logistics/transportation industry is required.
- A history of creating effective working relationships with people from diverse backgrounds and areas of technical expertise is required.
- Proven ability to implement new programs or practices designed to enhance service and value is required.
- Intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel and Word.
TECHNICAL SKILLS NEEDED - Strong research and data analytical skills and the ability to quickly understand and synthesize detailed economic information is required.
- Must be able to organize, clean and analyze data and present the results.
- Must have ability to prepare clear, accurate and concise reports, and compose and edit correspondence.
- Must be able to analyze information and identify data patterns, trends, and insights to confirm data validity and integrity.
- Strong report writing and communications skills required.
- Must have high-level organizational and planning skills to efficiently and accurately manage workflow.
- Must be able to set priorities, take initiative and exercise sound independent judgment.
- Must be capable of time management, effectively managing numerous diverse projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Ability to work well within a fast-paced environment handling a multitude of projects and ever-changing priorities is required.
- Develops and plans business development programs and evaluate its effectiveness.
- Must be available to work weekends and evenings as required.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) during course of employment.
