    A Senior Gardener at LAX, supervises, assigns and monitors Gardener Caretakers engaged in landscape maintenance activities, renovation projects, weed abatement and the pesticide/herbicide spray program. The Senior Gardener also operates riding mowers and various landscape power equipment, uses various hand tools, stakes and re-stakes trees, plants trees, shrubs and flowers, removes weeds, performs brush clearance and other landscape maintenance duties. This position trains employees in gardening, turf care, landscape maintenance, pesticide/herbicide application, soil maintenance and the proper and safe operation of power equipment tools, as well as perform installations/repairs to the irrigation system, tests and inspects the system for patterns and coverage. This position requests and receives new materials such as tools, irrigation components, fertilizers, plant material, herbicides/pesticides, landscape supplies/materials as required. Communicates with vendors, creates purchase orders and ensures completion of the purchasing process and vendor payment. Also interacts with contractors and other outside entities regarding scheduling specifications and progress of ongoing projects at LAX. Administrative duties include timekeeping of crew members, employee performance evaluations and handling disciplinary matters.

    This position provides the first level of staff supervision and ensures proper horticultural practices are used to maintain LAWA’s landscaped areas throughout the airport. It also is responsible for certifying that all Federal, State, and County regulations regarding pesticide application and usage are adhered to. A Senior Gardener requires a high level of gardening and irrigation skills and knowledge of planning, propagation, irrigation, pruning, and general care of ornamental shrubs and perennials which is consistent with the high standards required of LAX’s Landscape Section.

    Note: There is one vacancy on day shift (6:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m.) with a 9/80 work schedule. Regular days off will be Saturday and Sunday. This opportunity is only open to City of Los Angeles employees who have status as a Senior Gardener (Class Code 3143).

    The selected candidate must obtain and maintain a LAWA Security badge with Customs, Driving, and Escort Icons, possess and maintain a valid unrestricted California Class "C" driver's license, and be able to operate a City vehicle at all times during employment.
