    Position Description

    Tacoma Power's Power Management division is looking for a Data Scientist to join our team! In this role you will manage the Energy Resource Planning and Evaluation group's activities related to planning, research and evaluation of supply-side power resources, energy conservation, and demand response at Tacoma Power.
    Responsibilities include:
    • Responsibility for Tacoma Power's system planning model: Employ python-based computer programming, complex statistical and data science-based modeling techniques and forecasting methodologies to develop and refine Tacoma Power’s system planning model for use in IRP, evaluating supply and demand-side resources and other related analytical efforts for groups throughout the utility. Develop data pipelines for system planning model.
    • Quantitative data analysis: Lead complex quantitative analyses related to resource planning and operations using mathematical and economic analysis and advanced statistical and data modeling techniques.
    • Supervise: Serve as supervisor to Senior Data Analyst. Plan modeling work and ensure timely execution of work. Develop and apply leadership, supervision and management approaches which promote a healthy working environment.
    • Department SME: Provide direction and guidance inside and outside of Power Management on data science-based modeling approaches and efforts to use models of Tacoma Power’s hydro system to inform high-impact operational, policy and strategic decisions. Provide input and guidance on data science-based modeling approaches to regional partners and organizations. Serve in a key advisory role on a variety of issues impacting the workgroup and Power Management.
    • Present findings and recommendations: Make presentations /recommendations on high-impact operational, policy and strategic decisions to upper management and Public Utility Board.


    Qualifications

    Minimum Education*
    Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, computer science, economics, statistics, mathematics or directly related field.

    Minimum Experience*
    6 years' experience in statistical analysis or modeling that must include developing and building predictive data models, including 1 year prior at senior, lead and/or supervisory level

    *Equivalency: 1 year of experience = 1 year of education

    Licensing, Certifications and Other Requirements
    Some positions may require individuals to complete annual training and pass a comprehensive personal risk assessment (background check) prior to employment and every five years thereafter as required by federal regulatory requirements (NERC-CIP).

    Direct Deposit: Employees are paid on a bi-weekly schedule by direct deposit.

    Salary Increases: Based on satisfactory job performance, the City provides for a regular progression of salary increases for most classifications according to the salary schedule.

    Union Affiliation: Many job classifications are covered by union security provisions which require union membership, dues, or payment of equivalent service fees.
