    The Job

    The Department of Public Health (DPH), Black Infant Health Program (BIH) is recruiting for Social Worker II Trainees who provide complex social work services to assist individuals or families in enhancing their capacity for social functioning and assist in developing social service resources. Trainees work under close supervision while acquiring the necessary skills and experience to qualify for promotion to Social Worker II. The BIH Program provides culturally relevant, client-centered, strength-based and cognitive skill building services to eligible African-American participants for improving maternal and child health.

    Duties for the Social Worker II include but are not limited to:

    • Responsible for providing social service case management to clients.
    • Responsible for the management, facilitation, and organization of the group intervention with another group facilitator.
    • Maintains awareness and familiarity with local community and social services for client referrals.
    • Responsible for the development of a life plan that is on-going throughout the intervention.
    • Coordinates and consults with group facilitators to ensure that case management goals are linked to group sessions goals.

    Black Infant Health Program

    Within a culturally affirming environment and honoring the our unique history, the Black Infant Health (BIH) Program uses a group-based approach with complementary client-centered case management to help women develop life skills, learn strategies for reducing stress, and build social support. BIH participants participate in weekly group sessions, supported by one-to-one case management, designed to help access their own strengths and set health-promoting goals for themselves and their babies.

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

    Incumbents must be able to visit clients in their homes, in the field, and other settings to perform complete assessments of risk factors, and be able to visually observe injuries and the client's environment as mandated by the State.

    Travel: Travel throughout the County is required. A valid California Class C Driver License is required to carry out the essential job-related functions of this position. Proof of automobile liability insurance and clean driving record must be maintained. (Mileage reimbursement is available at current IRS rates).

    Availability: This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours, travel within or outside of the County for multi-day trainings, conferences, and other meetings related to your role of Social Worker II. Make sure to indicate a willingness to work these alternate schedules on your application.

    Promotion: Incumbents in the class of Social Worker II Trainee are eligible for promotion to Social Worker II upon completing the trainee period and receipt of a satisfactory Work Performance Evaluation. Incumbents must be promoted within twelve (12) months of hire or be terminated.

    Minimum Requirements

    Education: Thirty (30) semester (45 quarter) units of completed college coursework, half of which must be upper division , in behavioral science, psychology, sociology, social services, human services, behavioral anthropology, gerontology, cultural and gender studies, or human development. ( Note : Candidates with degree titles not specified above (e.g. Criminal Justice, Political Science, etc.) may be considered but must provide coursework for review.)

    Required Documentation: A list of completed coursework or copies of transcripts must be submitted with the application unless the applicant possesses a bachelor's degree (or is within 90 days of degree completion) in one of the specified areas listed above. Job offers may be made contingent upon degree completion; verification of qualifications will be required prior to hire. Qualifying degrees or coursework must be completed at a college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. BSW/MSW degrees or coursework must be approved by the Council on Social Work Education.

    Degrees or coursework completed outside of the U.S. must be accompanied by an evaluation report from a reputable credential evaluation service indicating equivalency to degrees or coursework completed at a college or university accredited by an accrediting association recognized by the United States Department of Education. Proof of the required completed coursework and/or degree(s) will be required at the time of the interview.

    Desired Qualifications

    The ideal candidate will possess strong knowledge, understanding and respect of the values, beliefs and unique needs of African-American women and the African-American community. Additionally, the ideal candidate will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and socio-cultural experiences. Further, it is imperative that the candidate fully embraces and supports the BIH Governing Concepts of cultural competence, client-centered, strength-based, and cognitive skill building approaches.
